BACKGROUND

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit working to win respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections for the 2.2+ million domestic and care workers in the US. Founded in 2007, we use organizing and civic engagement, strategic campaigns and innovative research, narrative and culture change, and alliance building to deliver on our mission of improving domestic and care jobs. Our 501(c)4 allied organization Care in Action is the advocacy home for women who care. Founded in 2006, Care in Action builds political power for women of color and domestic workers to ensure they have the economic support they need to thrive.


Our movement has made major strides to bring care out of the shadows and begin improving these essential jobs, but there’s still much work to be done. NDWA and Care in Action are now in a moment of organizational growth and transformation. A new strategic plan and significant growth capital investments have positioned our organizations to deliver on our transformative, North Star vision: An economy where care is valued and all work has dignity, and a democracy where everyone has a voice and sense of belonging.


POSITION SUMMARY

We seek a seasoned development professional to act as Director of Development Content during this pivotal time of expansion. Reporting to the Senior Director of Institutional Giving, the Director of Development Content will produce their own persuasive written materials for a wide range of donor audiences, and hire and manage a team of two additional writers. Your team’s primary responsibilities will include writing proposals, reports, and other materials for institutional funders providing unrestricted general operating and program-specific support. You’ll also provide writing and editing support for the individual giving team as needed, as well as support for other written narratives such as talking points for donor events. This means you’ll serve as the development team’s “Storyteller in Chief” by coordinating with staff across all NDWA teams to craft compelling narratives about what the domestic worker movement has accomplished so far, and our bold plans for the next phase of the work. The right person for this role will have at least 4-6 years of demonstrated, successful experience writing grant proposals and reports, be fluent in a variety of styles ranging from narrative storytelling to technical writing, and be able to navigate competing priorities while moving from project to project with ease. As a member of a high-performing, collaborative, and expanding Development Department you’ll play a key role in both sustaining NDWA’s philanthropic partnerships and shaping evolving team operations and culture.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop well-written content that blends storytelling and data to support organizational and program priorities and meet budgetary goals. This will primarily consist of grant proposals and reports, but also includes concept notes, organizational case statements, questionnaires and application forms for competitive awards, government-issued RFPs, and other organizational and program overviews.
  • Serve as a lead or key contributor for other high-level narrative content, including talking points for principals at high-profile donor events and briefings, cases for support, and other materials related to our upcoming capital campaign.
  • Proactively gather the information necessary to keep development writing fresh and accurate, including by building positive inter-departmental working relationships with program leads and other NDWA staff.
  • Assist with quick turnarounds on content related to new opportunities for programs we are seeking to grow at NDWA, such as 1-2 paragraph summaries on our work.
  • Edit and proofread drafts of proposals, reports, presentations, and other materials as requested.
  • Oversee a cross-entity grants calendar with 100+ annual written deliverables, ensuring that all external funder deadlines are met.
  • In collaboration with NDWA’s Research & Evaluation Department and development support staff, spearhead the creation of a grants monitoring system to track proposal and project objectives, metrics, deliverables, and expenses, to ensure consistent and accurate grant reporting that meets funder requirements.
  • With support from the Senior Director of Institutional Giving and other development teammates, hire, onboard, and manage a team of two Development Writers to support on the responsibilities listed above.
  • Develop and maintain a deep working knowledge of NDWA’s and Care in Action’s history, vision, mission, values, strategic goals, and programs.
  • Participate in other activities as needed, including organization-wide activities such as retreats, monthly meetings, and staff studies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ideal candidates will have exceptional English-language research, writing, and editing skills – and take joy in storytelling!
  • At least 4-6 years of experience in grant writing, preferably in social justice-related nonprofits or movement organizations, or similar work in the public or private sectors.
  • Understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and women of color, as well as experience across 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations a major plus.
  • Familiarity with standard methods of foundation cultivation and solicitation, understanding of program design and evaluation, and ability to hone in on and clearly communicate impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt writing style to different donor audiences and mediums.
  • Flexibility to rework content as needed through multiple drafts.
  • Experience reviewing organizational or project financial statements and budgets.
  • Project management skills and the ability to juggle deadlines, manage details to ensure smooth day-to-day operations, and be flexible in an environment where priorities can shift quickly.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and motivating direct report(s), including experience editing others’ work. Ability to manage up and across as necessary.
  • Deep sense of initiative, and ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and Google programs and development research tools. Familiarity with development CRMs (e.g., Salesforce, EveryAction) a major plus.
  • Alignment with NDWA’s and Care in Action’s mission, vision, and values.
