What does the role look like?

We have an exciting Principal Safety & Reliability role to support our General Defence Systems value stream which the role can be based remotely. In this role you will lead reliability and safety engineering within a multi-disciplinary project team.

You will bring to this role your knowledge of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) & Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). Furthermore you will possess knowledge of

reliability prediction & built in test coverage.

As the role is working on Defence products, you will need to be comfortable in this arena. You do not have to of had previous experience in Defence as we will look at transferable skills from other industries.

What will your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

  • Take full technical responsibility for milestones, document deliverables, and on-time, complete delivery.
  • Provide input to optimise system and product design for safety and reliability, including trade study data.
  • Collaborate with the Systems Engineering Lead to develop system architectures compliant with safety and certification requirements.
  • Develop safety and system-level architecture requirements for novel systems.
  • Provide analysis and data for new product introduction projects.
  • Prepare proposal sections for new equipment and support system studies.
  • Implement lessons learned from previous in-service experiences.
  • Investigate in-service failures, produce statistical models, and support the Product Integrity Committee (PIC) and Product Safety Board (PSB).
  • Participate in design reviews and assess the impact of design changes on reliability, maintainability, and safety.
  • Specify reliability and safety requirements for system components and bought-out specifications.
  • Develop Standard Work, lessons learned, processes, and best practices for reliability and safety.
  • Specify special test requirements to meet reliability and safety standards.
  • Support risk analysis activities, identifying risks and mitigation methods.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on reliability and safety across projects and mentor junior engineers.

What will you bring to the role?

Essential skills:

  • Capable of analysing systems at both unit and detailed design levels.
  • Good knowledge of Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) & Built In Test (BIT) Coverage
  • Comfortable working on Defence products

Desirable skills:  

  • Engineering/mathematics background with expertise in reliability and safety (R&S) engineering.
  • Proficient in Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Good understanding of mechanical and electronic engineering.
  • Proficient with word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to derive system designs from safety requirements and recommend design changes.
  • Experienced in interpreting, organising, executing, and coordinating milestones and document deliverables.
  • Capable of performing maintainability and occasional Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) analyses.
  • Highly motivated
  • Committed to high personal and professional integrity.
