Summary
East Side House, founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.
ESH’s Youth After-School Academy, a literacy-focused after school program for students in grades 6 through 8 from high-poverty communities in Bronx, NY. ESH managed After School Programs offer students additional learning time in a fun, engaging, and safe environment. Students are offered a wide variety of activities including homework help, robotics, team sports, karate, dance, and music. Educational methods are used to build and reinforce the skills needed to reach New York State standards for promotion and graduation.
At ESH the Teacher will be a part of a team responsible for guiding the design and implementation of instructional programming for Middle Schools. The Teacher will facilitate development and execution of academic interventions and learning strategies to support the individual learning strengths of our diverse population of learners
Primary Functions
Duties and Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:
- Organize and provide support or leadership for students where the primary program emphasis is to encourage learning by teaching specific skills or knowledge, providing constructive use of time, developing skills, enhancing social development.
- Provide academic support to students in the area of deficit.
- Work collaboratively with group leaders in implementing lesson plans.
- Recommend, develop, and facilitate activities that provide students an opportunity for growth.
- Maintain an awareness of the needs of individual students; consulting with the Program Director, or other designated staff for guidance and/or referral.
- Provide routine care and supervision to students in classroom setting.
- Participate in parent meetings and staff meetings, all team planning meetings, agency workshops and in-service training.
- Perform administrative record keeping, i.e., attendance, emergency telephone numbers and other functions as assigned.
- Submit weekly narrative reports to the director.
- Ability to adapt and creatively respond to the specific characteristics of the after-school program.
Remote Engagement:
- Experience facilitating live and pre-recorded activities
- Familiarity using web-based platforms to engage participants: zoom, google classrooms, etc.
- Monitor participant engagement and safety while on live sessions remotely
- Facilitate wellness checks/calls to families
- Follow remote working plan, policies & procedures as highlighted by the supervisor
- Maintain remote/virtual attendance logs & records
- Ensure the safety of program staff and participants over remote platform

- New York State Board of Education Certification.
- Bachelor’s Degree and at least 1 year of teaching experience.

Qualifications
Required Skills/Experience
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required,
- Master’s in education preferred
- 3+ years of experience in the field of education, preferably including a combination of classroom teaching and administrative experience, in both school and out of school time settings
- Demonstrated record in achieving results with low-income, urban adolescents
- Familiarity with research-based approaches to hands-on, experiential, community-based and/or project-based learning models, differentiated instruction, mixed –skill and age groupings, culturally relevant teaching practices, formative assessment techniques and working with English Language and students who are striving learners
- Strong knowledge of the academic and social needs of youth who are both in and out of school
- Ability to participate as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Understanding of and ability to meet performance-based outcomes
- Ability to adapt quickly to change and work within a results-orientated environment
- Knowledge of classroom management.
- Knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology efficiently

Expected Work Schedule
This is a seasonal part-time position, working up to 10 hours a week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs.

This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
