The Catastrophe Risk Management department is growing and seeking to add a new Catastrophe Analyst who wishes to join a highly technical and dynamic team that is tasked with driving improvement in the company’s overall management of catastrophe risk. If you are looking for a highly visible role that has a significant impact on the business, this position could be for you. We are searching for candidates that enjoy learning more about catastrophes, how they impact CNA, and how the company can price and manage risk to drive profitability. This role interacts frequently with Underwriting and Claims leadership, as well as other more technical groups. The Catastrophe Risk Management group strives to be best in class by: collaborating with senior leadership in developing strategic priorities, building tools and processes to facilitate the execution of those priorities, and reporting on the progress that is being made.

This position will report to the VP of Catastrophe and Exposure Management and will interact frequently with other team members and business units. This candidate will provide sophisticated portfolio analytics that influence various risk management and pricing decisions. A diverse set of skills is required within the context of an insurance company, such as: analyzing and manipulating data, building and maintaining tools, optimizing processes, and communicating findings with property leadership. We are looking for a motivated person who possesses a natural curiosity about a wide range of topics, and is flexible enough to learn quickly.

We are open to a variety of work arrangements including fully remote or hybrid from one of our CNA office locations depending upon candidate location and preferences.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Provide independent ad hoc portfolio modeling using the Verisk catastrophe model for the purpose of analyzing the impact of catastrophes on the company and the industry. 
  • Report findings to senior analysts and make recommendations to senior management.
  • Explain the impact of various catastrophe modeling metrics, attributes, and assumptions to various stakeholders.
  • Analyze statistical data from multiple data sources and provide insights.
  • Support the development of catastrophe strategies with other team members.
  • Create and coordinate reporting dashboards in MS Excel or Power BI.
  • Assist in the validation of various vendor models and data that could improve CNA’s ability to manage, price, or select catastrophe risk.
  • Build and maintain custom in-house tools to help the company better manage or price catastrophe risk.
  • Participate in assessing the impact of real-time catastrophes on CNA’s portfolio.
  • Oversee and submit rating agency questionnaires and respond to various regulatory obligations.

May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Solid knowledge of the Verisk or Moody’s RMS Cat model, statistical and financial concepts, and backend tables.
  • Proficiency with SQL coding.
  • Solid knowledge of core functions of an insurance company, general insurance and statistical, financial, and economic concepts.
  • Ability to analyze data, discover valuable insights, and develop thoughtful visualization dashboards in MS Excel or Power BI.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to effectively resolve moderately complex situations and issues. 
  • Demonstrates attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA’s internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team, manage time and resources to accomplish multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to generate new ideas and work well with a team.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make critical business decisions effectively within scope of authority based on data analyses and reviews.
  • Ability to adapt to change and value diverse opinions and ideas.
  • Ability to fully comprehend business information and to further articulate analysis in internal reports.  
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business related software and other company systems.

Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in technical field, such as computer science, math, actuarial science, statistics, engineering, physical science, or equivalent.
  • Typically a minimum of four years of related work experience.

In New York/California, the average base pay range for this role is $97,000 to $121,500. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location. 

In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $49,000 to $98,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
