Job description

Position Summary

The Office of Research and Innovation (OR&I) is a Major Administrative Unit (MAU) with more than 500 employees who support MSU’s research and creative activity by administering research funding, ensuring research integrity for both faculty and students, providing grant support services, fostering collaboration, licensing university inventions, and overseeing regulatory compliance.

This position will support the research administration efforts in the newly formed Post Award Grant Management (PAGM) unit within the Office of Research & Innovation. PAGM is a shared services model, designed to support units across campus with post award research administration. MSU is an affirmative-action, equal-opportunity employer.

Post Award Administration Services

  • Assists with the administration, monitoring, and financial management of moderately complex projects in accordance with applicable federal, state, local, and university policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Provides support with post-award administration of grants, contracts, clinical trials and PI initiated clinical research and trials.
  • Guides investigators by reviewing the award budget status; assists with preparation of interim and final financial and technical progress reports.
  • Examines project financials and budgets for accuracy and reports discrepancies to immediate supervisor and investigator.
  • Processes project account closeout activities; helps develop final reports, assists with analysis of project logistics as required, and notifies immediate supervisor and investigator of concerns.
  • Tracks progress of invoices, payments and subcontract and sponsor communication.
  • Coordinates ordering of supplies and services.
  • Prepare cost-share entries and effort reporting.

Research Compliance and Training

  • Reviews research compliance process components, including budget review and justification, feasibility, research billing process, conflict of interest reporting, program evaluation and monthly and annual reporting processes.
  • Helps leadership in the training of researchers, faculty and administrators on grant submissions, research and paperwork, clarifying roles and correct research process, and application of appropriate regulations.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business Administration, Finance, or a research-related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research administration in one or more of the research process areas of pre- or post-award processes, such as regulatory administration; experience in word processing, spreadsheet and database software; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. The job also requires: completion of Essentials of Research Administration (MSU certificate) or equivalent within one year of hire.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with MSU systems (Kuali Financial System, Kuali Research)
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects with competing demands
  • 1-2 years related experience in research administration, business, finance, higher education, or other relevant fields
  • Extensive experience working in Microsoft Suite Experience interpreting policy and/or regulatory requirements
