Position Title: Senior Director, National Medical Science Liaison Team Lead

 

The Senior Director, National Medical Science Liaison Team Lead is a field-based scientific expert who reports to the Head of Scientific Affairs. He/she will direct the strategy and compliant execution of medical science liaison field team initiatives. In collaboration with cross-functional partners, develop and implement strategic field initiatives to support scientific and business objectives. The Senior Director, National Medical Science Liaison Team Lead will support lifecycle management activities through communication of field insights and support of strategic data generation and dissemination.  This position is available as a remote position from a home-based office and will have significant expectations for travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities*

  • In partnership with the Head of Scientific Affairs lead the strategic development and execution of Esperion’s external scientific engagement and educational activities in alignment with Esperion scientific and business goals, including ways to measure success.
  • Quantify and report MSL impact on scientific and business goals and objectives.
  • Generate strategies for scientific engagement and execution within Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs) and other institutions, in collaboration with other internal stakeholders.
  • Guide compliant scientific engagement activities, including the education and communication of clinical, real-world evidence, and economic data, with medical opinion leaders, community healthcare providers, and Population Health Decision Makers (PHDMs).
  • In collaboration with Scientific Affairs leadership and cross-functional partners, elevate field scientific affairs insights and observations to inform strategy and tactics, including those informing lifecycle management.
  • Conduct ongoing analyses and prioritization of clinical/market trends to inform scientific engagement strategies, scientific data gaps, and field resources needed to meet business objectives.
  • Demonstrate and ensure quality in cross-functional collaboration between MSLs and commercial partners via proactive and compliant communication of MSL activities/outcomes to enhance the efficiency of addressing needs of medical opinion leaders, community healthcare providers, and PDHMs. 
  • Identify and direct ongoing training requirements of the MSL team based on strategic initiatives or market landscape in collaboration with Scientific Communications, HEOR, and Clinical Development. Ensures the competency of each MSL in relation to regulations, guidelines, and clinically relevant information.
  • Support Scientific Affairs field team at national and regional scientific meetings through competitive intelligence gathering and development of pre- and post-conference scientific engagement plans and materials.
  • Support investigator-initiated and collaborative research opportunities as well as serve as a liaison as needed between investigators in Esperion-sponsored clinical trials and internal stakeholders consistent with company objectives and regulations.
  • Actively coach and develop MSLs to establish a culture of excellence for field scientific exchange.
  • As needed, participate and provide scientific guidance at Medical, Legal, Regulatory (MLR) and Medical Scientific Review Committee (MSRC). 
  • Maintain regulatory and compliance expertise on internal and external regulatory practices and holds MSL team accountable for compliance.

Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • PharmD, PhD, or MD required
  • Minimum 10 years in a commercial life science company including 5+ years as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL); experience in lipidology with Cardiologists/Endocrinologists a plus.
  • Exceptional leadership/management skills; 3-5 years of experience leading field based MSL teams preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable federal and state regulatory requirements for field-based scientific personnel; successful track record of compliance. 
  • Experience/expertise in interpretation of scientific data, market research, competitive intelligence tools, drug information systems, and developing medical educational strategies
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication/listening and presentation skills: success translating/tailoring complex scientific concepts into simple language for targeted audiences 
  • Demonstrated problem solving abilities and strong organizational skills
  • History of collaboration/teamwork; reputation for successful partnering with internal and external stakeholders, including medical opinion leaders, community healthcare providers, IDNs, and PHDMs
  • Good understanding of clinical development and commercial environment
  • Proficiency with Veeva and Microsoft Office; in depth Word, PowerPoint & Excel skills
