Job description

What You'll Do

We are looking for an experienced Product Manager to join our team and drive the development of innovative tax compliance products. As a Product Manager, you will be responsible for defining and delivering products that align with Avalara’s business strategy, meet customer needs, and keep us at the forefront of the tax automation industry. You’ll work closely with engineering, design, and cross-functional teams to ensure the successful delivery of high-impact solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and define the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for assigned products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, UX, marketing, and sales) to ensure successful product launches.
  • Translate customer needs and market trends into actionable product features and requirements.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to prioritize the product backlog and make decisions on trade-offs.
  • Conduct market research, competitive analysis, and customer feedback sessions to identify new opportunities for product innovation.
  • Track product performance metrics and KPIs, and use insights to optimize and iterate on the product offering.
  • Communicate effectively with leadership, stakeholders, and teams to ensure alignment and transparency.
  • Act as the voice of the customer throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring that user experience and customer needs are at the core of the product development process.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in product management, preferably in a SaaS or cloud-based environment.
  • Proven track record of delivering successful products from concept to launch.
  • Experience working in Agile environments and familiarity with Agile product management tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence).
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and ability to collaborate with UX/UI teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams across geographies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a data-driven approach to product decisions.
  • Experience managing products that integrate with ERP systems or financial platforms is a plus.

What You'll Need to be Successful

  • Strong Customer Focus: You should have a deep understanding of customer needs and pain points, with the ability to translate those into actionable product features that deliver value.
  • Strategic Thinking: A demonstrated ability to align product decisions with business goals and market opportunities, while balancing short-term needs with long-term product vision.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Proficiency in using data analytics and metrics to track product performance and make informed decisions. You should be comfortable using tools like SQL, Google Analytics, or Excel to dive into data.
  • Agile Mindset: Experience working in Agile development environments, with a strong ability to manage product backlogs, prioritize features, and deliver incremental value through sprints.
  • Collaboration Skills: You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams including engineering, design, and marketing. Being able to collaborate, communicate, and negotiate across departments is key to success.
  • Excellent Communication: You must be able to clearly articulate product vision, requirements, and updates to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, keeping everyone aligned on the product goals.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable managing ambiguity and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment. You’ll need to be agile in your thinking and execution, responding quickly to new information or changes in the market.
  • Technical Aptitude: A solid understanding of how cloud-based, SaaS products work. While you don’t need to be an engineer, you should be able to work closely with technical teams and understand product integration challenges.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: You’ll be able to identify challenges and opportunities, and creatively come up with solutions that meet both business and user needs.
  • Drive for Results: A strong focus on delivering high-quality products that meet business objectives and improve customer experiences.
