A role with Engineering and Technical Design means being on a team of engineers and technical designers who create products that truly embody the intent of Target-owned brands.

As a Product Engineer, you will take ownership of the technical development process for one of our key product categories—Furniture, Lighting, or Outdoor Furniture—based on your expertise. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, sourcing, and merchants, to bring innovative product concepts to life. From interpreting creative designs to developing precise technical specifications, you’ll ensure that every product meets Target’s high standards for quality, safety, and performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the technical development of products within your category (furniture, lighting, or outdoor furniture), ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and performance standards.

  • Collaborate with design, sourcing, and merchant teams to translate product concepts into manufacturable designs, aligning with business goals and brand vision.

  • Develop and maintain detailed product specifications, covering raw materials, construction, dimensions, functionality, and performance criteria.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing challenges in partnership with vendors, ensuring timely and efficient production processes.

  • Stay ahead of industry trends and conduct competitive analysis to ensure Target products are market-leading in terms of innovation, quality, and performance.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and legal requirements, ensuring that Target products meet or exceed consumer standards.

  • Drive technical innovation by identifying opportunities to improve product quality, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.

About You:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, Product Development, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in product engineering, ideally within furniture, lighting, or outdoor furniture categories.

  • Strong understanding of product testing, safety regulations, and consumer goods compliance standards.

  • Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD software and solid knowledge of manufacturing processes.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams and external partners to bring products from concept to market.

  • Passionate about developing high-quality, innovative, and sustainable products that meet consumer needs.
