Job description

Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our Personal Finance team.

Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This paid role requires you to work for 40 hours a week. Fellowships can be hybrid or remote, and we expect New York-based fellows to come into our offices at least twice per week.

The Role & Team:

PFI produces service journalism about money. We help our readers choose the right bank accounts, save more for retirement, pay off their student loans, buy their first homes, and more. We value creativity, accountability, and diversity of ideas and opinions.

As a PFI Fellow, you will work with PFI’s editor to assist with updates to our existing coverage, with a focus on student loans, personal loans, and mortgages. You will help keep our coverage relevant as rates and products change and will be called upon to assist with optimizing our stories for search performance. While there will be some opportunity to write, a good portion of your time will be spent on updating and improving existing articles.

This role is a great opportunity for an early-career journalist to learn more about SEO and to develop skills that are essential to working in service journalism.

This PFI Fellow will report directly to Editor Sophia Acevedo and can be a hybrid or remote role. Business Insider asks any New York City-based fellows to come to the office at least twice per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with your editor to identify and implement SEO updates to key product guides and reviews
  • Run regular SEO tests and experiments
  • Communicate with our compliance team to ensure our coverage reflects the latest interest rates and product details
  • Assist with updates and coverage for other coverage areas (such as insurance, loans, and investing) as needed
  • Write new articles to fill search-based coverage gaps as needed

The ideal candidate has:

  • A background in journalism, writing/editing, and reporting online
  • Some knowledge of or interest in learning about loans
  • Basic SEO knowledge or interest in learning
  • An appetite for copy-editing, fact-checking, and perfecting the details
  • Drive to help readers make sense of complicated financial products and concepts
  • A commitment to fair and inclusive storytelling
  • A commitment to listening to and learning from Business Insider colleagues

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that’s accurate, fair, fast, and fun
Salary & Benefits:
  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment

Please apply with a resume and cover letter and specify why you're interested in working on this team. If you’d like some tips, check out our best practices guide.
