ROLE SUMMARY

Reporting to the Vice President overseeing advocacy and community engagement, the Director, Advocacy and Community Engagement helps to set and is responsible for leading the strategy for elected official engagement; parent, staff, scholar, and community outreach; and school renewals to ensure messages and collateral consistently articulate Alliance's mission, and preserves and builds our reputation at all times. This individual closely collaborates with the Director of External Affairs at the Alliance Foundation.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

Project Management

  • Work across Alliance organizations and build coalitions among government, community, and private institutions to drive multi-year advocacy strategy with elected officials, parents, staff, scholars at the local, state, and federal levels.

  • Utilize data to make informed decisions to improve our advocacy strategy.

  • Design, build, and roll out systems to align work across team functions to strengthen project management and execution.

Elected Official Engagement

  • Engage Alliance’s strategic engagement framework with elected officials to build and improve relationships with their constituent services offices and gain support on key legislation.

  • Serve as Alliance’s advocacy spokesperson at school board and city council meetings, statehouse briefings, community forums, etc. 

Parent, Staff, Scholar, and Community Engagement

  • Partner with the Alliance Family Engagement and Community Schools teams to streamline and strengthen parent and community outreach efforts at school sites. 

  • Establish strong partnerships with community organizations, including other charter networks and local and statewide advocacy organizations, to collaborate on strategic initiatives. 

  • Based on current elected official and parent engagement plans, build outreach plans for Alliance staff and scholars and community members. 

Team Engagement

  • As needed, manage consultants that support various marketing and outreach efforts.

  • Collaborate across the Strategy and Innovation team (Strategy, Communication, Marketing, Innovation) with Alliance’s CEO Support, Operations, and Instructional teams, as well as the Alliance Foundation, to support our advocacy agenda and school renewal efforts.

Education and Advocacy Experience

  • School-based experience, either in the K-12 or higher education space. 

  • Knowledge of urban school systems, school environments, and school culture.

  • Awareness of executive branch and legislative structures and policies impacting charter networks and the education sector in Los Angeles and California.

  • Experience organizing briefing sessions with elected officials, presenting at committee meetings, and speaking in public settings.

  • Experience managing grassroot campaigns and building relationships with key community stakeholders, including other charter networks.

Communication, Analytical, and Management Skills 

  • Ability to convey information in writing and verbally to a variety of audiences (e.g., large groups, staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, memos, etc.).

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills and experience managing complex projects with competing priorities and multiple deadlines. 

  • Ability to form collaborations and partnership within a multi-layered organization and across external stakeholder groups. 

Technology Skills

  • Fluency with office and communication tools, including Google Suite and MailChimp. 

  • Experience with campaign and organizing database platforms, such as Murmuration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 4 years of progressive professional work experience in advocacy, parent, and community engagement and a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in political science, public administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university

OR

  • At least 6 years of progressive professional work experience in advocacy, parent, and community engagement and a high school diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED)

WORK LOCATION

This position is a hybrid role which will include a combination of working from home, our network office, and travel to school sites. The successful candidate will be given a $400 work from home set-up allowance and receive a monthly stipend of $100.

  • Relocation: Individuals residing outside of the Greater Los Angeles area are eligible for a relocation bonus of $5,000 for individuals and $7,500 for new staff with families/partners.

  • Retirement: Alliance Home Office employees are eligible for a retirement allowance equal to 7.5% of their regular yearly earnings. Please click HERE for more information on retirement.

  • Paid Leave: Regular full-time 12-month employees receive 8.5 weeks of vacation and paid time off. Full-time employees accrue 3 weeks of flexible paid time off per year and receive 27 other paid holidays as part of our network calendar.

  • Professional Development: At Alliance, we believe in supporting staff growth and development. Home Office staff are allocated $500 per year for professional development expenses.

$100,000.00 - $140,500.00
