Role & Responsibilities

The Director of Technology is responsible for the agency’s technical strategy and execution, focusing on delivering high-quality e-commerce solutions, optimizing technology workflows, and supporting the agency's long-term growth. This role requires hands-on technical expertise and strategic vision to lead the development team and collaborate with cross-functional leaders, such as Project Managers, Designers, and Client Services, ensuring cohesive project delivery.

  • Technology Vision and Strategy
    • Define and execute the agency’s technical vision and strategy in alignment with company goals and industry trends.
    • Drive innovation, exploring emerging technologies to enhance e-commerce capabilities and client offerings.
  • Platform Migration Management
    • Lead end-to-end platform migration projects, specifically transitioning clients from complex platforms (e.g., Salesforce) to Shopify. This includes overseeing data migration, custom API connections, and ensuring seamless integration with the client’s other systems.
    • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to identify all dependencies, mitigate risks, and proactively solve challenges, ensuring a smooth transition without interrupting client operations.
  • Process and Workflow Optimization
    • Establish and refine development processes to improve efficiency, quality, and client satisfaction.
    • Implement standards for coding, testing, deployment, and documentation, ensuring best practices across all technical projects.
  • Technical Oversight
    • Oversee all development projects, ensuring that solutions are scalable, secure, and meet client expectations and agency standards.
    • Lead architectural decisions and provide guidance on complex problem-solving, including e-commerce platform (typically Shopify) customizations, integrations, and API connections.
  • Resource Allocation
    • Manage technical resources, including staff allocation and freelance contractors, ensuring the right balance for project timelines and budget constraints.
    • Prioritize projects and allocate resources in collaboration with the Head of Delivery or Director of Operations, ensuring projects stay on track.
  • Team Leadership and Development
    • Lead, mentor, and support the development team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
    • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide growth opportunities for team members, including training and professional development.
  • Hiring and Onboarding
    • Work closely with HR and other department leaders to recruit top technical talent, ensuring alignment with agency values and standards.
    • Oversee the onboarding process for new hires, establishing technical standards and practices from the start.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration
    • Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Designers, and Strategists to ensure seamless project execution and timely delivery.
    • Partner with Account Managers and Client Services teams to communicate technical concepts to clients, aligning technical solutions with business objectives.
  • Client Engagement
    • Participate in high-level client meetings as the technical representative, helping to translate complex technical concepts into clear and understandable language.
    • Provide technical input in pre-sales and scoping discussions to ensure accurate project estimations and feasibility.
  • Quality Assurance and Security
    • Oversee and establish QA processes, ensuring products are thoroughly tested and meet high standards of functionality, security, and performance.
    • Implement data protection and security measures in compliance with regulatory standards, safeguarding client and agency information.
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement
    • Monitor industry trends in e-commerce technology, particularly around Shopify, emerging software, and development practices.
    • Regularly assess and recommend improvements in technology stack, tools, and software that drive efficiency and elevate client service offerings.

Requirements

About You

  • Proven expertise in e-commerce platforms, with a focus on Shopify, including Liquid templating, customizations, and API integrations.
  • Strong background in frontend and backend technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React or Vue), and server-side programming.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading large-scale replatforming initiatives, particularly from enterprise platforms like Salesforce to Shopify.
  • Strong understanding of data structure, mapping, and API integration challenges during platform migrations, with a focus on minimizing data loss and maintaining workflow integrity.
  • 5+ years in a technical leadership role, managing development teams, and overseeing project delivery within an e-commerce or digital agency environment.
  • Strong people management skills, including hiring, mentoring, and managing performance.
  • Familiarity with project management principles and Agile methodologies, with experience in resource allocation, budgeting, and timeline management.
  • Proficient in project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Monday.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to think strategically, aligning technical goals with business objectives and growth opportunities.
  • You hold yourself and others accountable.
