Job description

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to employee success and we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Review more information at BNL | Benefits Program

The Nuclear and Particle Physics Software (NPPS) Group in the Physics Department at BNL participates in BNL’s nuclear and particle physics experiments and programs such as DUNE, the ATLAS experiment at CERN, the Belle II experiment at KEK, the sPHENIX experiment at BNL, and many others. Working with the experimental groups, scientists and software developers in NPPS group design, develop, maintain and apply scientific software for the experimental programs in the Department.

The NPPS Group has an opening for a postdoctoral associate position to work on DUNE software and computing development with a particular focus on prompt processing and databases. You will play a central role in advancing workflows and algorithms to be used by DUNE in the analysis of data from both prototypes and future detector modules. The work will focus on designing the software, algorithms, and workflows that will enable LAr TPC scientists to perform efficient and world-class measurements utilizing a variety of computing platforms and architectures. The successful candidate will bring their physics expertise and learn from a team of world-leading HEP-software experts and extreme-scale computing experts from BNL to advance modern software development. The position has potential to extend effort and expertise to other experiments as well over time.

The successful candidate will be experienced in nuclear and/or high energy physics software development. We are seeking a physicist with strong software skills and an interest in a scientific software career path, individuals prepared to focus on software and computing while also making world-class physics measurements with LAr TPC detectors. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Scientific software development for nuclear and high energy physics experiments that are part of the NPPS program
  • Play a central role in developing and using algorithms to provide prompt processing of raw data for DUNE
  • Leverage NPPS software and experience to develop infrastructure that will allow complex workflows across heterogenous architectures
  • Support the integration of the output of these algorithms into the database infrastructure for DUNE.
  • Lead analysis of LAr TPC data and publication of physics measurements based upon that data.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in experimental particle or nuclear physics. Candidates must have received the Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.
  • Experience in particle or nuclear physics software development and computing
  • Demonstrated strong programming skills in C++
  • Knowledge of distributed computing models and workflows to utilize such resources
  • Experience in collaborating with a distributed team of scientists and software developers

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in developing reconstruction algorithms and production frameworks
  • Experience with database development and integration into HEP software
  • Demonstrated strong programming skills in Python
  • Experience with digital signal processing and analysis
  • Experience in applying machine learning to scientific problems
  • Experience in heterogeneous computing (e.g. GPUs)

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Please submit your resume/CV, research statement and list of publications with your application to this position.
  • You may receive an email request to submit reference contact information if necessary.
  • Location: Upton, NY.  Consideration for flexible work arrangement (hybrid telework or remote) is at the discretion of the supervisor and Dept. Chair.
