Description

Sports Illustrated is seeking a seasoned and innovative writer with a deep expertise in breaking, trending and viral sports content. This role is designed for an individual who not only thrives on identifying and covering the biggest stories in sports but also plays a key role in shaping our coverage strategy. We're looking for an experienced journalist with strong instincts and the ability to set the agenda with timely, compelling and insightful storytelling.


What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the creation of breaking and trending content, ensuring timely and authoritative coverage of major sports events and stories.
  • Develop and implement strategies to surface and tell the most important and engaging sports stories of the moment.
  • Write and edit sharp, engaging, and accurate content that attracts and retains a wide digital audience.
  • Create attention-grabbing headlines that optimize for search and social sharing, maximizing the visibility of your stories.
  • Monitor and analyze sports trends through various platforms, including social media, news outlets, and analytics tools.
  • Identify unique angles and craft fresh takes on current sports topics.
  • Collaborate closely with editors and the newsroom to ensure content aligns with Sports Illustrated’s editorial vision and goals.
  • Provide advanced analysis and context to trending sports stories, elevating Sports Illustrated’s voice as a leading source of insight and thought leadership.
  • Guide junior writers and provide constructive editorial feedback to maintain a high editorial standard.
  • Utilize SEO best practices and digital growth strategies to drive traffic and audience engagement.


The expected salary range for this position is between $75,000 and $95,000. Actual pay will be determined based on skills, experience, and location. The benefits available for this position include flexible vacation policy, 15 paid holidays, paid parental leave, health insurance, 401(k) with company match.


Requirements

What You’ll Bring:

  • 5+ years of experience in digital journalism at a leading sports media organization.
  • Proven expertise in creating and managing high-quality breaking and trending content under tight deadline pressure.
  • Strong editorial judgment with the ability to decide which stories matter most and how to cover them.
  • Experience in optimizing content for search and social platforms, with a track record of growing digital audiences.
  • Strong writing, editing and communication skills, with the ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • A passion for sports and a deep understanding of the dynamics that drive the sports news cycle.
  • Leadership qualities, including mentoring junior writers and contributing to editorial strategy discussions.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field
