We are looking for an Underwriting Practice Leader for our Marine line of business. This position will be remote and we would prefer candidates reside in New York or in one of the Northeast United States.

The Global Technical Office Team houses Allianz Commercial (AzC) chief underwriting office, comprised of an ocean cargo, inland marine, and hull line of business. The Impact You Will Have
Reporting to the Global Product Leader – Cargo, the Underwriting Practice Leader is responsible for the underwriting results in defined line of business for the Region; including setting underwriting authority, managing underwriters in a matrix environment, providing underwriting direction and support, as well acting as referral manager for business that exceeds local underwriting authority.
Some of your specific responsibilities could include:
- Research information on competitive trends, product line trends, producer trends and external environment, including legal, economic, demographic and distribution trends. Recommend new and revised products and programs, underwriting standards and procedures, and provide guidance on pricing within the regions. Monitor product result and develops proposals to maximize profitability, including the review of claims/large losses/trends.
- Monitor a consistent underwriting governance framework for the LoB. Drive implementation of underwriting guidelines, rules and principles, conditions, pricing tools and best practice processes and standards. Complete business reviews to ensure quality of execution of local underwriting.
- Review and support referrals within area of expertise that exceed regional underwriting authority. Identify, develop and implement underwriting policy, procedural and program changes in accordance with the underwriting strategies and regulatory environment. Ensure appropriate training programs are implemented and maintained to develop the level of underwriting expertise needed.
- Proactively manage and steer NatCat exposure (in liaison with CAT Risk Management and NCCSD). Compilation of AzC global portfolio data for reinsurance purchase and exposure modelling. Proactively manage underwriting treaty portfolio (in liaison with Reinsurance).
- Qualitative analysis, management of LoB portfolio incl. profitability analysis (e. g. trades, distribution channels etc.) and KPI reporting. Monitor market performance and accumulation control. Build up and maintain data pool
What You’ll Bring to the Role –
- A minimum 7 years’ significant experience in underwriting profitable business in Marine. Specialized expert understanding of multiple sub-LoB products and portfolio. Demonstrable, established relationships with brokers at peer group level and well established within market. Specialized understanding of regional/local LoB insurance markets and competitor landscape, including global elements. Good understanding of legal and regulatory framework. Experience working in complex, global matrix organization.
- Preferably a bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Business Administration, Finance or Economics. Completion of a professional insurance qualification.
- Knowledge of the insurance industry, intermediary operations, insurance laws and general business operations.
- Well versed in the technical knowledge of multiple inland marine products such as construction, transportation, miscellaneous coverages, and property (i.e., builder’s risk, contractor’s equipment, motortruck cargo, physical damage, mono line property for small to medium risks, and scheduled property floaters).
- Comprehensive knowledge of competition and marketing conditions. Knowledge of AzC and competitor marketing, sales, and UW strategies for assigned LoB.
- Ability to analyze highly complex data, from multiple sources, in detail; identify and resolve issues before they transpire. Ability to develop, implement and communicate strategies to address important trends or changes in the business. Ability to express ideas and messages clearly, both written and verbally. Ability to "sell" an improvised or prepared audience winning story. Portfolio Management including analysis of actuarial tables, trend analysis, CAT aggregates, etc.
The annualized base pay range for this role is $102,375 to $224,550. The annual base salary range represents a nationwide market range. The actual salary for this position may be above and will be determined by several factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role, the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate. The base pay is just one component of the AzC total compensation package. As part of our comprehensive compensation and highly rated benefits programs, employees are also eligible for annual performance-based cash incentive awards.
