Job description

Overview
As the Vice President of Engineering, you will define the internal IT strategy and manage the team that deploys and maintains it. You will also define and maintain the security posture across the organization, provide education, ensure that best practices are followed, and minimize incident exposure.


You will be tasked with supporting the careers and professional growth of the engineering team, ensuring they have opportunities for advancement and are challenged to grow in their roles. It will be your responsibility to coordinate the engineering roadmap with other departments and ensure the success of all technology-driven initiatives. You will support your team in the delivery of new facilities joining the program and ensure the systems and services that make up The Last Mile platform can scale to support that growth.


You will ensure the engineering team delivers scheduled milestones on time and completes routine maintenance. You will also contribute to organization-wide management by tracking team productivity through GitLab and setting goals.


Responsibilities

  • Design and ensure suitable management of the organization's supported IT platforms and infrastructure.
  • Define, document, and maintain engineering and security standards for use both within the organization
    and with external partners.
  • Develop and oversee disaster recovery and IT security plans, minimizing risks and ensuring business continuity.
  • Provide a rolling roadmap for engineering and contribute to quarterly and annual OKRs.
  • Provide input and expertise on complex technical escalations to support the engineering team.
  • Review observability metrics and provide recommendations to ensure platform reliability and performance.
  • Highlight and address security concerns within platforms and services.
  • Manage the operating budget for the engineering department.
  • Review and contribute to project plans that engage engineering resources.
  • Manage a team of engineers you support in growing their skills and experience.
  • Support the engineering team in their use of agile project management processes.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to team members on work products, be it technical contributions,
    product architecture, and other areas for development.
  • Foster technical decision-making on the team but make final decisions when necessary.


Required Soft Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience as senior engineering manager or director.
  • Ability to work and communicate with a wide range of internal and external constituents
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining meticulous attention to
    accuracy and detail.
  • Self-starter, motivated by goals and committed to The Last Mile mission.

Required Technical Skills & Experience

  • Bachelors in Computer Science, preferably a Master’s or equivalent experience.
  • At least ten years of experience in administering information systems and technology, with increasing responsibility.
  • Experience building and maintaining IT systems and planning network infrastructures.
  • Experience in security-focused environments and a solid background supporting a model of least privilege and
    zero-trust infrastructure.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of IP networks, their design, security, reliability engineering, and scaling.
  • A proven track record designing and managing platforms remotely from end to end.
  • MacOS operability and security protocols.
  • Identity Management experience using 802.1x for identity visibility at the network level and for application authentication
    via Auth0. Emphasis on RBAC and SSO where possible.
  • Expert knowledge in Terraform, Ansible, Infrastructure as Code, GitLab, Google Workspace, ChromeOS management, and
    Google Cloud Platform administration via Terraform.
  • Experienced using Ansible for FOSS application configuration.
  • Strong experience using Palo Alto Networks Panorama to design and manage VPC policies and templates for VM-based and
    hardware-based firewalls, layered network infrastructure and ACLs for remote classroom sites and program/PaaS sandboxes.
  • Experience with with Ruckus switching and vSZ to support Wi-Fi deployments 
  • Previous experience with ABM, DEP + MDM and Munki application packaging for MacOS
  • Emphasis on creating clear and concise technical documentation for internal use. 
  • Making security awareness a key tenant of organizational culture, training, and team education.

Compensation$128,000 - $214,000 / year (salary dependent on experience and location)
