Job description

Spotify’s awesome Legal team is growing. We’re facing cutting-edge challenges that mirror the cutting-edge industry and product at the heart of our company. As we’ve expanded into more than 180 markets and our company has grown tremendously, we find ourselves facing new and exciting legal issues every day. As Spotify’s Head of Intellectual Property, you will be responsible for managing the company’s patent and trademark risk and overseeing protection of the company’s technology and brands. This includes driving the strategy and execution of our patent, trademark, and copyright portfolios, IP counseling (including support for M&A and other transactions), and disputes. 

What You'll Do
  • Drive the strategy and execution of our patent and trademark portfolio
  • Advise on what inventions to protect and how best to protect them, working with internal patent engineers and external patent counsel
  • Oversee our trademark enforcement program
  • Review and assess incoming patent license demands and patent infringement allegations
  • Develop freedom to operate strategies
  • Draft cease and desist letters and other correspondence relating to infringement of intellectual property, and handle resolution of routine matters as the primary point of contact with adversarial parties
  • Work closely and cross-functionally with other members of the Spotify legal team to provide hard IP input on product counseling and transactional matters

  • Who You Are
  • You have a law degree (or equivalent) from a top-tier law school
  • 10+ years of experience in intellectual property, including at both a law firm and in-house, preferably at a tech company
  • You are a member of good standing of at least one US state bar and are qualified to practice as in-house counsel in the State of New York
  • You are tech-savvy and can quickly learn and understand cutting-edge technology
  • A passion for legal problems; you can explain legal concepts to non-lawyers
  • A problem solver, and can stay calm when problems come your way
  • You are self-motivated and can identify and attack work to be done without being instructed
  • You can adapt to fast-moving and changing projects, prioritizing and triaging effectively
  • You have experience drafting IP provisions for transactions including both commercial and M&A
  • Excellent communication skills, and are comfortable with and competent at working cross-functionally

  • This position is located in New York, New York
  • The United States base range for this position is $198,441-$283,487, plus equity. The benefits available for this position include health insurance, six month paid parental leave, 401(k) retirement plan, 23 paid days off, 13 paid flexible holidays.
