Job description

Delivery Manager, Consulting (United States)

Who We Are

We are 8th Light, an employee-owned, remote-first software consultancy, we consider software design, development and product management a craft. We’re driven by our deep commitment to excellence, and powered by our collective depth of knowledge and experience. 8th Light is a global team rooted in a culture of continuous learning and collaboration. We are headquartered in Chicago, but our more than 140 team members live and work in locations including London, New York, Los Angeles, and Austin.

We partner with forward-thinking people and organizations to help them imagine and create elegant, robust and secure software solutions for their complex challenges. We’re crafters, so we care about everything we create, building with integrity and in sustainable ways. By exemplifying the values of humanity, education, and ownership in everything we do, our crafters help clients master the challenges in front of them while building great opportunities ahead.

Who You Are

As an experienced managerial software professional you have shown dedication and commitment to the advancement of people and teams delivering technical project work. Your experience over at least the last 10 years has been anchored in the technical milestones of delivery but also in the support of technologists and designers in their day to day work and over their careers. In addition to understanding how to plan, lead and deliver an Agile software project from beginning to end you also know how to keep things on course and course correct if needed. You are grounded in the belief that great projects are inspired by great minds and people.  Thereby you have become a go-to leader for delivery stewardship, guidance, advice but also a people advocate who is teacher, mentor and ally. You have an ability to relay the experiences you have amassed to wide cohorts of people in a relatable manner. You inspire team members’ confidence in themselves and you groom others into more competent software technologists and consultants, all while also balancing the needs and interests of the business.   In your previous experience, you have:

  • Initiated client or project work with a consultative approach, knowing how to estimate the scope and size of custom software projects to be manageable and executable.
  • Successfully managed Agile software delivery projects using various methodologies (e.g. Scrum, XP, kanban, etc.)
  • Provided ongoing support to projects, including identifying potential delivery roadblocks and other technical considerations while facilitating solutioning and ideation to enhance opportunities for clients and software delivery teams.
  • Provided specific, actionable feedback to technologists and/or designers on their performance via both formal reviews and ad hoc guidance and coaching.
  • Purposely found opportunities for others to grow and develop their knowledge, skills and capabilities over time through support, providing resources and advocating for their advancement.
  • Made thoughtful recommendations and set direction in the face of ambiguity or disagreement resulting in decisions that enable teams to deliver better quality outcomes.
  • Used your communication skills to empathetically connect with stakeholders and colleagues and keep everyone informed and connected with as much transparency as possible.

What You’ll Do At 8th Light

As a Manager at 8th Light, you’ll work with a variety of clients, typically one to four at a time. You will lead projects, working with teams who share your passion for designing and creating high quality software. Your delivery stewardship will ensure we shine as a team and ultimately your expertise will enable us to achieve success for our clients by executing thoughtfully. You will invest time developing your skills and sharing what you know in support of those who you manage and lead. You’ll be responsible for:

  • Maintaining relationships with key client stakeholders and their leadership including technology, software and product leaders
  • Managing teams of developers (we call them “crafters”) and designers, ensuring well running, self organized teams
  • Leading delivery of agile custom design and development software projects (scoping, issues/risk management, quality management, continuous improvement, etc.)
  • Partnering with development, design, and product leadership
  • Participating in account planning to help drive revenue growth in the accounts you manage.
  • Making immediate contributions to projects, rapidly building trust with all stakeholders and clients
  • Providing coaching, career guidance and formal feedback to team members
  • Ensuring your team has a healthy, prioritized, estimated backlog
  • Managing high-level project roadmaps as the team lead for large engagements
  • Contributing to 8th Light internally, including but not limited to: sharing knowledge (e.g. by leading or designing workshops), representing 8th Light in the tech community, supporting our hiring processes, etc.

Nice to Have

We work across many areas, and encourage anyone with the experience listed to apply. We would particularly like to encourage applicants with experience in the following areas:

  • Human centered custom software solutions
  • Data engineering
  • Native mobile development
