Job description

Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

The High-Performance Computing (HPC) Group at PNNL seeks a post-doctoral researcher with a strong background in quantum computing, with full-stack experience ranging from materials to algorithms. The position will be within the funded Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA) project under the US Dept. of Energy National Quantum Information Science (NQIS) portfolio. The candidate should have a background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or similar field of study. The candidate will be expected to perform world-leading research as part of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory within already established funded projects focusing on quantum computing. The candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with laboratory personnel in computing and application domains, as well as researchers at collaborating national laboratory, university, and industry partners on activities focused on the development, application, benchmarking, compilation, and optimization of quantum algorithms and software.

Responsibilities And Accountabilities Include

  • Perform Quantum Computing research employing co-design principles, collaborating with world leading QIS institutions
  • Engage with teams of quantum computing experts, navigating US QIS Landscape research directions and accomplishing multi-institutional research.
  • Engage in quantum computing research focused on error mitigation, correction, systems research, and characterization.
  • Publishing results in highly visible, peer-reviewed venues, including conferences and journals
  • Participating in and potentially leading technical presentations on the work
  • Participating in team meetings and potentially interacting with funding sponsors

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or similar background
  • Experience with end-to-end research on Quantum Computing, proposing ideas, exploring ideas, and publishing.
  • Candidates should have a background in quantum computing and experience in one or more quantum programming languages, such as Qiskit, Q#, QuTiP, Pennylane, etc.
  • Experience with Stabilizer simulations or Quantum Error Simulation
  • Experience with specific NISQ , and how we interact with these platforms
