Your missions

Business Insider is hiring a fellow to join our Economy team in January 2025.

Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider’s three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Business Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. This role requires you to work for 40 hours a week and can be fully remote.

Applications close on October 18.

The Role & Team:

The Economy desk’s mission is to cover how the economy affects Americans’ everyday lives. We cover the job market, housing, taxes, work culture, and anything else that impacts Americans' experience of the economy.

The fellow will cover everything from breaking news developments in Washington to in-depth reporting explaining the latest economic-policy trends. They will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, writing, pitching, and covering breaking news such as economic data releases, Federal Reserve decisions, federal government budget and policy, and Supreme Court cases with economic implications. We are especially looking for someone who can synthesize the latest news and numbers and write voice-y, informed takes on the issues of the day.

The Economy Reporting Fellow will report directly to Emily Canal. This role will be based in New York. Fellows are expected to come into the office at least two days per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and publish a mix of quick hits and analysis every week
  • Identify trends in the economy and analyze how they affect Americans’ lives
  • Interview sources ranging from experts on the economy to people making major life decisions about jobs, where to live, and how to spend their money
  • Keep an eye on breaking news on Capitol Hill related to economic policy

The ideal candidate has:

  • A keen eye for important and timely policy developments and how they impact average Americans
  • The ability to break down complex economic and political topics and explain them clearly and in a conversational tone
  • A broad knowledge base spanning both the political and economic spheres
  • A fundamental understanding of how the economy works, and the tools the government employs to exert influence
  • An understanding of how adjustments or proposed changes in economic policy flow through to various levels of government, and eventually on to Main Street

Additionally, all of our editorial fellows should have:

  • A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced global team
  • A self-starter attitude and excellent organizational skills
  • Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience
Salary & Benefits:
  • Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
