About The Role

In This Role, You Will

  • Independently review and analyze intricate tax returns for individuals and businesses, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Utilize your analytical skills to determine tax liabilities, identify violations of federal tax statutes, and make recommendations for both criminal prosecution and civil penalties.
  • Provide valuable accounting and financial management advice to higher levels of management.
  • Examine a range of financial operations and systems, gaining insights into diverse financial scenarios.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed audit statements, including schedules and exhibits reflecting final adjustments, tax liabilities, and additions for various taxpayers, including individuals, corporations, and trusts.
  • Conduct independent examinations and investigations of tax returns, focusing on complex cases involving hidden or concealed income.
  • Review financial and operational data for exempt organizations, ensuring compliance with tax regulations and advising on exemptions.
  • Evaluate qualified retirement plans to ensure adherence to qualification, reporting, and tax requirements.

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must meet the following educational requirements:

  • A Certificate as a CPA or a bachelor’s degree in accounting with at least 30 semester hours in accounting or 24 semester hours in accounting plus 6 semester hours in related subjects such as business law, economics, or financial systems.

Specialized Experience

  • For the GS-5 level, education alone is sufficient. For higher grades (GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, GS-12), you must meet additional specialized experience or education requirements:
    • GS-7: One year of specialized experience in accounting or auditing, or one year of graduate-level education in a related field.
    • GS-9: Specialized experience equivalent to GS-7 or two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in a related field.
    • GS-11: Specialized experience equivalent to GS-9 or three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a PhD in a related field.
    • GS-12: Specialized experience equivalent to GS-11.
