Your missions

Overview

Join a dedicated team supporting the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Medical Coding Program Branch, which plays a critical role in ensuring that Army, Navy, and Air Force medical services are prepared to care for military personnel in all situations. The DHA Medical Coding Program aims to improve the accuracy and quality of medical coding and documentation across all facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support compliance efforts across approximately 400 military treatment facilities and dental clinics.
  • Participate in virtual meetings and conference calls, with occasional onsite visits within and outside the continental United States (CONUS and OCONUS).
  • Utilize computer systems extensively to review federal laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Develop reports, analyses, and position papers.
  • Conduct investigations and report findings on non-compliance issues.
  • Work on revenue integrity projects and provide recommendations for process improvements related to medical coding.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Education: An associate degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field; OR relevant coursework such as anatomy, medical terminology, or pharmacology.
  • Certifications: One or more of the following recognized certifications:
    • Professional Services Coding Certification: RHIT, RHIA, CPC, or CCS-P.
    • Institutional Coding Certification: RHIT, RHIA, CIC, or CCS.
    • Coding Compliance Certification: CPCO or CHC.
    • Auditing Certification: CEMA or a similar evaluation and management auditing certification.
  • Experience: At least 10 years in medical coding or auditing across multiple specialties, including 5 years in an auditing or compliance role; OR 3 years in a military coding environment.
  • Skills: In-depth knowledge of coding systems (ICD-CM, PCS, CPT, etc.), reimbursement methods, revenue cycle management, strong written communication skills, project management concepts, and the ability to assist with online training development.
  • Travel: Ability to travel up to 10%.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional certifications such as CPMA or CHRI (or similar revenue integrity certifications) are a plus.
  • Prior experience with the Military Health System (MHS) or Defense Health Agency (DHA) is highly desirable.
