About The Department

The School of Social Work is a dynamic and inclusive academic community that has committed over a century to educating future social work leaders. We have CSWE-accredited MSW and BSW programs and focus on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion to positively impact individuals and society through community-engaged practices, research, and partnerships. Our headquarters are located in Indianapolis, with programs across seven campuses enrolling approximately 1,800 students in doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s programs.

Job Summary

We are looking for a dedicated and student-centered Academic Advisor to join our collaborative team at the Bloomington campus. This role focuses on providing comprehensive academic advising and support to both incoming and enrolled graduate students in the Master's program. The Academic Advisor will collaborate with the MSW Program Director and Associate Dean.

Responsibilities

  • Department-Specific Duties:
    • Serve as a primary contact for students, offering academic advising and support.
    • Review student files, monitor academic progress, and guide students in developing their personal academic plans.
    • Conduct orientation sessions, participate in committees, and represent the School of Social Work at various events.
    • Maintain accurate records of student advising contacts while ensuring confidentiality of student records.
    • Coordinate with local employers to identify potential MSW applicants.
  • General Duties:
    • Provide academic counseling to assist students in planning their course of study and making informed academic and career decisions.
    • Educate students on navigating university systems, academic processes, and policies.
    • Refer students to suitable campus resources and monitor their academic progress.
    • Represent the advising function at campus meetings and recruitment events.
    • Contribute to the development of best practices for academic advising and related initiatives.
Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Required: Master's degree in a related field.
  • Work Experience:
    • Required: 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field. Experience in a student-focused higher education environment is highly desired.
    • Preferred: 3 years in a similar field with higher education experience.
  • Skills:
    • Required: Excellent communication, professionalism, strong time management, flexibility, reliability, accuracy, and adaptability to new technology, along with knowledge of best practices in academic advising and understanding of FERPA requirements.
    • Preferred: Familiarity with career counseling techniques.
Working Conditions

This role requires effective communication and proficiency in operating standard office productivity equipment. It involves both sedentary work and periods of mobility around the office and campus, with the ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.

Work Location

This position is remotely based in Bloomington, Indiana and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, subject to change based on university policy and business needs.
