Job Description

The Welfare and Self-Reliance Department strives to follow Jesus Christ by embracing the two great commandments to love God and love our neighbors as it ministers to temporal needs, builds temporal self-reliance, and blesses both givers and receivers. The Welfare and Self-Reliance Manager is the point of contact for area and local leaders, providing awareness, training, and support on Church resources and services to help minister to those in need. The position is located in either Italy or one of the Adriatic countries and serve as a support to the existing manager in place.

Are you driven to help those in need and make a difference in the world? Do you naturally connect and build relationships with those around you “whether out of the Church or in the Church” (Alma 1:30), including executive leaders, coworkers, and beneficiaries? Do you enjoy solving problems and managing complex projects within given guidelines but still being creative and able to improvise? If so, feel invited to apply for the Welfare and Self-Reliance Manager role in the Europe Central Area.

Responsibilities

Leader Support - Counsel with leaders on their needs and priorities. Assist in identifying and sharing Church and community resources to respond to needs. Act as point of contact for Church resources such as Self-Reliance, Humanitarian Aid, Family Services, BYU Pathway, Perpetual Education Funds, JustServe, and Emergency Preparedness. Support and implement Area Presidency initiatives.

Training - Maintain general subject matter expertise on Welfare and Self-Reliance supported services and products. Provide general and specialized welfare and self-reliance training to members of stake councils and other leaders.

Resource Development – Build expertise on local market trends and provide practical support in employment, education, humanitarian, entrepreneurship, commodities, emotional/behavioral health, and emergency response and other welfare and self-reliance services and products.

Leadership – Oversee and provide strategic direction and loving support to full-time senior and service missionaries. Work with local leaders to call church-service missionaries and assign volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to the mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-days Saints.
  • Masters’ degree (preferred) or equivalent work experience in business, project management, international relations, or related discipline.
  • Seasoned professional with a minimum demonstrated experience of 8 years, including 4 years of direct management, and demonstrated success working with upper-level management.
  • Native or advanced English proficiency with the ability to communicate complex ideas verbally and in written form; must be fluent in at least one additional central/eastern European language – e.g. Italian, Albanian, Greek, Turkish, or another language spoken in an Adriatic country.
  • Experienced project manager, capable of following multiple subject matter projects simultaneously with a high level of analytical and creative skills, and strong personal computer skills.
  • Ability to establish strong interpersonal relationships of trust with NGOs, as well as senior church, business, and community leaders, and to represent the Church with professionalism.
  • Church leadership experience, including understanding the correct application of welfare and self-reliance principles and the ability to interact with large and small groups in different settings.
  • Must be able and willing to travel extensively and work in a mobile office, outside regular working hours and occasionally on weekends. Smart working is a possibility.
