Role Summary

Head of UX Design oversees delivery and provides leadership to teams of UX Designers who are responsible for all visual and interactive designs for mobile, web, and desktop custom applications for internal and external clients. Head of UX Design assigns and allocates team resources, determines design strategies, sets delivery schedule to meet client requirements, oversees quality of all design deliverables, as well as owns all sales efforts regarding ChaiOne design offerings. Head of UX Design works collaboratively across the organization with other practice areas to meet strategic objectives. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Define and direct Design strategy and process for the integrated and scalable design team within the larger Experience practice 
  • Establish Design strategy for various internal and external client projects and oversee execution of strategies outlined in SOWs; support multiple projects through the entire User-Centered Design (UCD) lifecycle to digital solutions from user needs identification to deployment 
  • Establish, document and communicate standards for all ChaiOne Design deliverables, with the aid of Design team members 
  • Support production of comprehensive Design deliverables (e.g., site maps, wireframes, visual comps, specs & assets, heuristics reports, etc.) to ChaiOne's standards 
  • Work within highly effective ChaiOne delivery teams to deliver all design deliverables:
    • On time
    • Within project parameters
    • Up to ChaiOne Standards
    • To internal and external stakeholder satisfaction
    • Targeting repeat engagement outcomes 
  • Identify opportunities for follow on work within existing client projects 
  • Create and maintain rapport with internal and external project teams, including stakeholders; effectively communicate with all parties
  • Direct training of a highly effective UX Design team, including soft and technical skill development to advance more effective, efficient delivery of services and maintain high talent retention 
    • Identify skills gaps for direct reports and create skills development goals to aid in individual professional development 
    • Support professional development of each direct report 
    • Oversee team skills development to ensure successful, efficient, consistent delivery of UX Design services  
  • Collaborate with other practice areas (e.g., Behavioral Science, Data Science, etc.) to develop and grow ChaiOne's offerings in order to deliver more value for clients 
  • Own project estimate completion and quality; represent Design in pre-sales activities such as project estimations, writing proposals, meeting with clients 
  • Serve as design subject matter expert during business development process activities, and communicate ChaiOne design offerings, capabilities
  • Demonstrate active professional presence in the user experience (or related) communities by attending/hosting/speaking at events, creating thought leadership content, maintaining membership in related organizations 
  • Contribute to billable client work at an agreed-upon utilization rate, either as a individual contributor or as Design visionary and strategist
  • Must be willing and available to travel and work on local client sites as required

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages Intern, Associate, Senior, and Lead UX Designers within the UX Design discipline. Supervises according to the organization's policies and relevant laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training staff; managing team career growth; planning, assigning, and directing tasks; evaluating performance; recognizing and addressing employee development; and handling complaints and resolving issues

 

Qualifications & Skills

  • Degree from a four-year design program
  • Must have experience with a variety of digital technologies and form factors 
  • 10+ years related work experience in projects that involve collaboration with research and engineering teams. 
  • Experience working  within agile delivery framework
  • Previous experience of working within an agency or consulting firm is a major plus
  • Experience conducting Design Research, user interviews, workshops and other requirements-gathering methods
  • Experience designing based on extensive user requirements and primary data
  • Highly proficient in design principles such as typography, color theory, composition 
  • Strong written and presentation skills
  • Strong communication and consulting skills including but not limited to:
    • Active and effective listening
    • Anticipating others’ needs
    • Reading and adjusting to the audience
    • Negotiating
    • Influencing
    • Navigating conflict situations
    • Providing effective feedback
  • Demonstrated experience educating team members, leadership, client stakeholders in various aspects of UX design 
  • Ability to lead and coordinate multi-designer project teams, mentor and guide designers and non-design collaborators
  • Ability to educate, advocate, and guide multidisciplinary project teams and client stakeholders on human-centered design, best UX practices, and methodologies
  • Track record of attracting and retaining strong talent 
  • Comprehension and ability to assess design scope and effort for features, functionality, and product needs 
  • Demonstrated experience supporting business development efforts by collaborating and providing estimates on a variety of design engagements and activities including new and ongoing projects
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully communicate design estimations, efforts, strategies, and processes to clients during business development and on projects
  • Demonstrated ability to create business cases and assist in developing proposals
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively

 

Travel

This role will require occasional travel to client sites (up to 20%).
