Summary of Job Duties:
A Staff Scientist supports the research of a faculty-rank investigator or may serve as a director of or team member within a multi-user core facility. A Staff Scientist, under general direction and with considerable latitude for exercise of independent judgment, provides direct research and research training support at the professional level by directing and executing small, complex research projects or major aspects of larger research projects. He/She may provide extensive guidance to and/or directly supervise technicians, laboratory aides, graduate students, undergraduate students, postdoctoral appointees and professional staff. He/She makes significant and creative contributions to research in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence.
The Staff Scientist works independently and has sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the laboratory. He/She is capable of independently designing experiments and assisting one or more faculty members in results interpretation, publication, and faculty member pursuit of grant or other funding. The Staff Scientist does not have responsibilities for initiating new research programs or individually submitting grant or other funding applications. While it is neither required nor expected that he/she engages in non-research activities ordinarily undertaken by faculty – such as teaching, serving on a dissertation committee, or serving on national or international advisory panels – he/she could do so at the discretion of their faculty supervisor.
A Principal Staff Scientist will have distinguished themselves by serving as co-investigator on multiple extramural grants and through a significant track record of authorship on peer-reviewed publications

Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree and ten (10) years of relevant experience; including significant project management experience, personnel supervision, and editorial and scientific contributions to grants. Postdoctoral fellowship experience preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Works independently as part of a complex research project/program. 

  • Analyzes and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of work and in relation to the general research program.

  • Prepares written reports on all phases of laboratory work involved in research projects.

  • Contributes to the design, interpretation and final writing of research publications.

  • Writes detailed protocols for the conduct of research. 

  • Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by reading current research literature, abstracting scientific articles of value in the prosecution of research problems, and attending and presenting at scientific meetings, seminars and research conferences. 

  • Develops and implements operating procedures for the laboratory, and independently operates complex equipment and instrumentation.

  • Develops and modifies test methods, evaluates the performance of research equipment and instrumentation, and makes design changes or develops new approaches. Selects procedures for data collection and handling; develops or utilizes computer programs for conversions and statistical treatment of data. 

  • Directs the gathering of research materials, supplies, equipment and apparatus. Coordinates service support: repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials. 

  • Participates in the training, supervision and evaluation of research support staff, fellows, and students, as needed. Directs initial training as well as continuous skill development of staff/trainees in laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures, as needed. Counsels staff/trainees on technical problems; advises and assists staff/trainees with special research projects. 

  • Develops and controls research project budgets in consultation with supervising faculty.

  • Recommends expenditures for major laboratory equipment and construction.

  • Authorizes expenditure for expendable supplies and maintenance

  • Provides a degree of project leadership that is appropriate to the rank; demonstrates an exemplary level of leadership and independence

  • Provides overall program/project leadership and management

  • Conducts and publishes research with minimal guidance required from the supervising faculty investigator

  • Conducts research across multiple programs or projects as relevant

  • Participates in long-range research planning

  • Manages multiple levels of research staff
