SUMMARY: The School Safety Coordinator facilitates & promotes a safe, orderly, and caring environment by coordinating programs designed to reduce school violence and to engage students in appropriate behaviors and activities that promote character and facilitate academic growth. The SSC will support leadership in the development and coordination of all school safety and wellness initiatives.   Working together with school administration/staff on emergency response, external partner relations and student wellbeing.

  • Plans and implements programs and activities to reduce school violence.
  • Promotes character education concepts and serves as a positive role model.
  • Maintains high visibility throughout the school.
  • Collaborates closely with the local law enforcement and external partners.
  • Coordinates program-related staff development for faculty and staff as indicated.
  • Monitors student behavior and develops interventions for improvement.
  • Makes classroom presentations on program-related topics in coordination with instructional staff.
  • Communicates effectively with students, parents, administration, and staff.
  • Involves parents and community as “on-site” advocates in the schools.
  • Serves on the School Safety & Emergency Response Team.
  • Assists the administrative staff with security and wellness concerns.
  • Periodically participates in alternative and remediation programs, and attendance academies.
  • Attends scheduled Safe School Coordinators and School Resource Officers program meetings.
  • Participates in professional growth opportunities.
  • Completes monthly reports and other accountability reports (such as for grants) as assigned.
  • Makes recommendations to school administration and staff utilizing needs assessment data and observations.
  • Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing diversity.
  • Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Minimum 2 years experience in education and/or law enforcement or school safety.
  • Properly licensed by (or ability to) Ohio Department of Education and successful completion of background check
  • Working knowledge of conflict resolution, student wellness, school safety, crisis intervention and developing programming to understand school safety.
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school safety services
  • Some knowledge of the school organization and the community served
  • Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health/law enforcement agency, and other community resources
  • Ability to develop and maintain school crisis response reporting.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Certificates and Licenses: Ability to obtain a paraprofessional or other certification/licensure in Ohio.  

OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.); Web proficiency.
  • Ability to travel 20% of the time
  • Ability to clear required background check
