What You'll Do
At Avalara, we are building a global cloud compliance platform, and the Reliability Engineering Observability team is essential to the development and maintenance of this platform. Our engineering teams are diverse in practices, culture, and backgrounds. We build and maintain systems that empower them to produce high-quality products efficiently.
As a member of our team, you will be responsible for the design, architecture, operation, and advocacy of our observability platform tools. You will leverage your software engineering expertise to address both technical and organizational challenges related to application reliability. Our mission is to enhance system resilience and performance through innovative observability solutions.
Qualifications
- Observability Tools: Extensive experience with open-source observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, FluentD, OpenTelemetry, and Tempo. Proven ability to design, implement, and manage observability platforms to monitor and analyze the performance and reliability of distributed systems.
- Service Level Objectives/Indicators (SLOs/SLIs): Strong experience in developing and maintaining SLOs/SLIs, instrumenting applications for monitoring, and creating meaningful alerts to ensure system reliability and performance.
- Linux Fundamentals: Solid experience in administering, securing, and performance tuning Linux distributions. Proficiency in managing Linux environments to support observability tools.
- Troubleshooting: A passion for diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues in distributed systems using observability data. Skilled in root cause analysis and incident management.
- Software Engineering: Deep understanding of software engineering principles, with a focus on integrating observability into the development process. Experience working in collaborative engineering teams, with a strong emphasis on testing and code quality.
- Automation: A strong desire to automate monitoring and alerting processes, reducing manual toil, and improving system reliability.
- Containers/Kubernetes: Solid understanding of managing and maintaining container-based systems, particularly within Kubernetes environments. Experience deploying observability solutions in containerized architectures.
- Infrastructure-as-Code: Experience deploying and maintaining infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or Pulumi, particularly for observability systems.
- Technical Writing: Ability to create clear, comprehensive documentation and diagrams for observability systems to support other engineering teams.
- Customer Satisfaction: A keen eye for ensuring the satisfaction of internal customers (engineering teams) by providing reliable observability solutions that meet their needs.
- Passion for Learning: Continuous interest in expanding knowledge of the broader technology landscape, particularly in observability and monitoring technologies.
- Adaptability: Proven ability to adapt to new challenges and technologies, with experience working on diverse projects.
What You'll Need to be Successful
Experience
- Minimum 8 years of experience in a SaaS environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent.
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation.
