Steps To Getting a Mortgage License

  • Apply for an NMLS account and ID number.
  • Complete state-specific mortgage Pre-license Education (PE).
  • Pass the licensing exam.
  • Apply for your state mortgage license through the NMLS.
  • Complete background checks and pay applicable fees.
  • Associate your NMLS account with an employer.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; 4-year degree preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience: At least 6 years of experience originating mortgage loans.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of financial institutions, products, and services.
  • Skills: Excellent cross-selling, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Communication: Ability to effectively interact with borrowers, builders, and realtors.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to handle time constraints with strong attention to detail.
  • Physical Requirements: Extended hours sitting and performing computer tasks may be required.
