About the role

As a Claims Consultant in our Property Large Loss team, you will handle multi-line complex claims through all distribution channels. You will  be responsible for the direct handling and monitoring of complex first party and third-party claims with exposures in Canada and Internationally. The types of losses may include Commercial Property, Energy, Equipment Breakdown, Environmental Liability and additional Specialty Claims. The Claims Consultant performs the settlement of complex claims, civil liability or property damage, plays a fundamental role in managing the processes surrounding disputes or alternative dispute resolution bodies, undertakes the functions of analysis and evaluation of claims, liability and provisions and contribute to unit priorities, including providing expertise as needed, mentoring and participating in the budget process.

What you’ll do here:

  • Manage, investigate, analyze, negotiate and resolve large and complex commercial property claims generally with exposures over $1M or involving specialized kind of loss within Canada and internationally;
  • Engage and manage internal and external counsel, consultants, adjusters, accountants and engineers to confirm coverage, determine liability and assess damages;
  • Mentor, guide and provide technical advice to regional file handlers to ensure consistent and effective claims handling and support long term succession planning;
  • Train colleagues on complex claims handling;
  • Work with Underwriting, Loss Prevention and other stakeholders to identify potential risks, hazards and trends, sharing feedback and lessons learned;
  • Provide brilliant customer service to Brokers, Customers, and Colleagues
  • Deliver and exceed on all key performance indicators as it relates to loss development and loss adjustment expenses, claims leakage control and expense management;
  • Leverage your expertise in a creative, continuous improvement environment to support a model of best practice operations;
  • Effectively negotiate claims when appropriate;
  • Attend settlement conferences and trials.
  • Attend loss locations and other client and broker meetings, when appropriate.

What you bring to the table:

  • A critical thinker and have intellectual curiosity when approaching complex problems in time-sensitive situations
  • A skilled communicator allowing you to foster favorable business relationships and provide clear guidance to clients
  • A problem-solver and able to gather information, evaluate a situation and negotiate the next steps toward a solution
  • Able to adapt to changing needs and understand the need to be flexible and agile
  • A planner and able to effectively organize to establish an effective strategy
  • A strong collaborator and have a passion for mentoring and coaching others
  • 10+ years experience with direct handling of large and complex commercial property claims.
  • Appropriate knowledge of all relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the position
  • Undergraduate Degree or CIP designation (asset)
  • Flexible to travel as needed

Salary of the successful candidate will typically be positioned between the following range, taking into consideration a number of factors including prior experience, qualifications, anticipated contribution to role, location and internal equity:

$75,900.00 - $113,900.00
