Your missions

Crisis Group is searching for a Senior Analyst, South Caucasus, to undertake research and advocacy on conflict prevention and mitigation at a critical time when Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has aggravated regional tensions and Armenia and Azerbaijan pursue peace talks.

This is a demanding but rewarding role that mixes a great deal of responsibility and freedom. We are seeking a diplomat, researcher, academic or journalist with a record of distinction. The senior analyst will be well-versed in foreign and domestic policy issues across the region, able to generate and debate ideas geared at preventing and mitigating deadly conflict.

The ideal candidate will be just as comfortable in the field as in high-level advocacy meetings. We are seeking a colleague who combines a nuanced understanding of the regional political, economic and security landscape with the ability to research deeply, write authoritatively, and present persuasively on policy ideas. They will be a self-starter, sensitive to security considerations and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced and often challenging environment.

Based in the region, the Senior Analyst will undertake research and draft reports and shorter texts for publication which examine and propose solutions to prevent or mitigate deadly conflict in the South Caucasus, including consideration of security, political, legal, governance, human rights and social issues. The Senior Analyst will help develop and actively champion Crisis Group policy positions on the conflicts in Georgia and between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The successful candidate will also represent the organisation at events and in the media - locally, nationally and internationally.

Specific responsibilities:

  • In consultation with relevant colleagues, conducts extensive field research into prevailing issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan and within Georgia, including - where relevant - consideration of security, political, legal, economic and social issues as well as human rights, climate, gender and governance;

  • Provides high quality written analyses - in clear and concise fashion - of the risks and origins of deadly conflict in the region in the form of detailed reports and briefing papers for publication as well as shorter derivatives (such as podcasts and op-eds) while respecting agreed deadlines;

  • Proposes realistic and pragmatic policy recommendations and initiatives for conflict actors including political, civil society and other stakeholders at the national as well as regional and international levels aimed at preventing, mitigating or resolving conflict;

  • Advocates for Crisis Group policy positions and recommendations and represents Crisis Group at events; one on one with officials and other stakeholders; and in the media - locally, nationally and internationally;

  • Provides support to Crisis Group leadership, including the program director and deputy program director, for the organisation's activities and advocacy in the region and globally;

  • Independently and in a timely manner completes administrative duties, including tracking of activities, expense management, etc;

  • As required, supervises consultants and/or stringers.
