Director, Labour Relations
Reporting to the Senior Vice-President, Human Resources, the Director, Labour Relations is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of Labour Relations (LR) across Canada.
As the Company expert on labour relations, the Director, Labour Relations fosters positive relationships with our union partners, contributes to the development and implementation of effective labour relations strategies and leads our collective bargaining negotiations nationally.
A hands-on strategist, the Director is also responsible for leading a team in managing labour agreements, resolving disputes, ensuring compliance with labour laws and policies, and providing strategic guidance on labour issues to operational and senior leaders.
An integral part of the Human Resources leadership team, you will use your insights on Labour and Labour trends to lead and/or support various ER initiatives including, but not limited to, Learning and Development, Health & Safety and providing dedicated support to functional leaders.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic leadership in the development and execution of LR strategies aligned with organizational goals;
- Lead and mentor a team of two in the execution of the Labour Relations mandate.
- Advise on Labour Relations matters at all levels of the organization;
- Lead and/or direct collective bargaining negotiations, working towards fair and mutually beneficial agreements that meet the organization’s business objectives;
- Resolve litigation cases ie. Labour Board, Human Rights, H&S, grievances and arbitrations, settlements, proceedings, etc. in consultation with legal counsel , operational managers and senior leaders;
- Build and maintain positive relationships with union representatives;
- Educate management & HR on evolving labour laws, related regulations and new trends;
Requirements:
- University degree in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations, or a related field;
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience;
- Demonstrated success as a lead in collective bargaining negotiations;
- Experience working collaboratively in a diverse and dynamic organizational environment;
- Excellent written and verbal proficiency;
- Knowledge of LR principles; including collective bargaining and grievance management, conflict resolution, change management and best LR practices
- Knowledge of employment legislation including provincial Labour Codes, Human Rights Acts etc.;
- Experience developing plans, objectives, and initiatives to achieve and promote the behaviors, culture, and capabilities needed to achieve business strategies and organizational goals;
- Experience as a strategic partner, building influential relationships with key stakeholders across a large organization.
