Your missions

We are looking for

Are you passionate about driving the future of smart home technology by balancing user needs, business goals, and technical innovation? Do you have a knack for solving complex problems and turning them into clear, actionable solutions?

Nabu Casa is looking for a Product Manager to join our Product & Design team full-time to help turn our vision into reality by defining, building, and scaling products that make smart homes accessible, private, interoperable, sustainable, and personalized.

As one of the most active open-source projects in the world, Home Assistant powers over 1 million households globally, providing the smarts — convenience, comfort, security, personalization, and more — to our users' homes by automating, monitoring, and providing control of their devices. We are dedicated to achieving our Open Home vision — a smart home built on privacy, choice, and sustainability.

The Product & Design team at Nabu Casa helps us envision the future of the Home Assistant project and turn it into reality. We manage our product roadmap and the alignment, discovery, ideation, design, and validation phases of each product, while we work with our engineering team for implementation and our marketing team for launch. Founded last year, our team has been working hard to steer the Home Assistant project towards a user experience that is both powerful for our advanced users and intuitive for other users in their houses.

Unlike other corporate or startup companies, we have no investors, and we are active maintainers of our project and its open source community. We work openly by talking to our contributors and users often, and keeping them engaged with our directions and progress. You have easy access to our users for collecting feedback and validating ideas at any time through our enthusiastic user base and research pool. You will work with user researchers, designers, and engineers within Nabu Casa as well as contributors in our community to bring your visions to reality.

What you are going to do
  • Product Strategy and Vision: Be the product expert and define a clear product vision, for the areas involving our Home Assistant Cloud offering, companion apps, documentations, open protocols, the ESPHome project, and more. Keep an eye in the big picture by observing user and industry trends. Develop product strategies that balance user needs, business goals, and technical feasibility. Balance short-term deliverables with long-term strategic goals.

  • Product Management: Lead product opportunities throughout each stage of its product development lifecycle: alignment, conception, discovery, ideation, implementation, validation, launch, to post-launch evaluation. Translate user needs into clear product requirement documents and user stories.

  • Project Management: Execute our product vision, set clear milestones, prioritize goals, and track progress to ensure that projects are delivered on time and meet quality standards.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with stakeholders across product, engineering, marketing, support, and community teams to ensure cohesive execution. Facilitate communication and alignment across teams, ensuring everyone understands the product goals and how their work contributes to them.

  • Roadmap Development: Help with shaping our product roadmap, collect and process feedback for our product opportunities, and prioritizing features, enhancements, and bug fixes to ensure that we deliver maximum value to our users.

  • Community Engagement: Actively participate in our open-source community. Engage with contributors and users, incorporating their feedback into the product development process. Maintain transparency in our product decisions and keep the community informed of our progress.

What you need to have
  • Familiarity with the Home Assistant project

  • Product Management experience: Within the software, tech, or smart home industries.

  • Communication skills: Ability to tell the story of our products, facilitate workshops, achieve consensus amongst stakeholders, and build rapport amongst team members.

  • Self-driven: Know how to become the product expert in particular product areas. Be proactive in improving our products and processes.

  • User-driven: Have empathy for our users. Know the importance of speaking to users often.

  • Data-driven with a focus on privacy: Be able to determine the right metrics to track and analyze, while keeping in mind that we respect the privacy of our users and do not collect analytics unless necessary.

  • Technical Acumen: Basic understanding of software development processes and technical concepts. Ability to work effectively with engineers and contribute to technical discussions.

  • Smart home knowledge: Have a good understanding of the world of home automation. Share our values of the Open Home - privacy, choice, and sustainability. Better yet, you have already built an extensive smart home using Home Assistant or other home automation software.

  • Fluency in English.

It would be great if you also have
  • Affinity with open-source development: Experience contributing to open-source projects and engaging with their communities.

  • Software experience: Collaboration software such as GitHub, ClickUp, Google Workspace, and Google Meet.

  • User research skills: Ability to create and conduct qualitative and quantative user research is a plus.

  • Public speaking skills: Be able to passionately share our product vision and progress with our community in our forums and during our live streams.

If you do not perfectly match this profile but are an active member of the Home Assistant community, we'd still love to hear from you!

What we offer you

Nabu Casa is a fully remote company that uses Remote to employ people from all over the world. You will be a regular salaried employee in your country, and no work visa is required.

  • Five weeks (twenty-five days) of paid time off.

  • If you are currently working on Home Assistant-related side projects, you can spend work time maintaining it.

About us

Nabu Casa is best known as the organization driving the development of Home Assistant, the world's largest free and open-source smart home platform. More than one million households benefit from its home automation capabilities. Powered by a worldwide community of open-source developers, GitHub ranked it the second most active open-source project in the world in 2023.

We were initially founded to ensure that the development of Home Assistant would remain sustainable as it kept growing, but over time, it has grown to support more open home initiatives. In 2024, the Open Home Foundation was formed to protect these open-source projects and ensure they thrive into the future. Nabu Casa is a commercial partner of the Foundation, and our principals are aligned with a joint commitment to privacy, choice, and sustainability in the smart home. These are the values that we put at the heart of every decision we make. It's woven into our architecture, licensing, community, and everything else.

Nabu Casa is profitable, has no external investors, and our only funding comes from people subscribing to Home Assistant Cloud and buying Home Assistant hardware. That means the only stakeholders we have to concern ourselves with are our employees and our users. We now employ more than 30 contributors from all over the world to make sure they have the financial freedom to focus on Home Assistant and other open-source projects that help drive the Open Home vision.

Other Open Home Foundation projects and collaborations supported by Nabu Casa include:
