About Fluent

Every business's relationship with data will radically change once every decision-maker has all their data at their fingertips. This is now possible with LLMs.

We help our customers answer questions like:

  • “Which artists achieved more than 100 million streams over the last year?”

  • “How many donations did our charity receive last month?”

  • “Which of our customers are about to churn?”

We allow business leaders to instantly access the insights they need using natural language, allowing data teams to focus on more strategic tasks instead of ad hoc requests.

We recently raised a $7.5M investment round and work with brands like Bain & Co. and NBC Universal.

👋 How we work at Fluent

At Fluent, we believe that a small team of amazing people can outperform the average team of 100 people. What sets us apart is not just what we do, but how we do it. Here’s what our team has shared about the attributes that make Fluent a unique and rewarding place to work:

  • Self-managing and self-starting: When we see a problem or area of improvement we just go and make it better. We don't wait for permission or need a fully scoped solution to make things happen.

  • Trusting and independent: We have the freedom to try things our way. We trust each other to do what work best for them, from experimenting with new tools and methods to working flexibly around their lives.

  • Collaborative and supportive: We are flexible and helpful to each other, quick to jump on huddles to resolve anything. We are there as a sounding board whenever people need.

So we think that people who appreciate this working style will have the highest chance of being successful at Fluent. Please see our careers page for more about life at Fluent.

🧐 Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for an engineer who is keenly interested in working with LLMs to help us build the text interface to data. The ideal candidate has built projects with LLMs in the past and wants to take ownership of core components and features of Fluent. We’re a small team that moves fast, so expect to be shipping features and major changes from day one.

This is an in-person position in London at our office in Holborn.

Even if you think you don’t fulfil some of the requirements here, if you are excited about this role, please apply.

🎯 What will you be working on?

Our primary focus is nailing the core product experience:

  • Fluent should feel intuitive to business users to quickly access data insights.

  • Data teams handle the setup, embedding business logic into Fluent needs to be a simpler process, ensuring it delivers accurate answers.

More concretely, over the next six months our key product goals are:

  • Build out the data user experience, making it simpler to setup and manage at scale

  • Continue iterating on the core chat experience - making it easier to use for business users

  • Make Fluent more interpretable to data teams (to answer “Why did Fluent give this answer?”)

  • Build out Slack and Teams integrations to meet business users where they are

  • And plenty more as we continue to learn from our customers

🤟🏼 You'd be a great fit if you:
  • Are driven and want to achieve something spectacular

  • Are product-minded and user-driven. You're keen to deeply understand our customers and drive the direction of our product.

  • Have the LLM bug. You are working on LLM projects within your current role or in side projects, stay up to date on the latest models and enjoy hacking together LLM systems for fun.

  • Think from first principles. This is especially important when working with LLMs - there are no well-established best practices.

  • Are excited to work in a startup environment with quick product validation cycles

  • Are action-biased. The most important thing for us is moving fast - often this means running quick-and-dirty experiments to test ideas.

💻 Our Current Stack:

We’ve tried to keep the stack as simple as possible, and the current non-exhaustive stack is:

  • Python + Django + PostgreSQL + AWS + OpenAI

  • Typescript + Next.js + Tailwind + Vercel

You’ll primarily be writing in Python and we’re not totally wedded to using OpenAI.

⚙️ Interview Process

It's pretty short!

  1. Application: Send your CV and why you’re interested in this role to careers@fluenthq.com

  2. Culture Fit Interview: We get back to you and set up a 30 min interview with our CEO, Rob, on Zoom/Google Meet/etc. to talk about your experience, the company, and do culture fit stuff.

  3. Technical Interview: If that goes well, we'll conduct a ~1-hour technical assessment with Henry and Liam, our Lead Engineers, at our office in Holborn (can be a video call if scheduling is tricky). This assessment will focus on a real-world problem related to Fluent.

  4. Trial Day Interview (paid): A paid workday with Fluent (we will pay £250 per day): come into our office for a day. You'll spend the morning working on a task, have lunch and spend time with the team and then demo what you built in the afternoon.

  5. Offer: And if that goes well, we’ll make you an offer!
