Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Sr. Underwriting Consultant – Stop Loss!

About The Role

As a Sr. Underwriting Consultant for Stop Loss, you will evaluate risk on new and/or existing accounts and develops appropriate pricing. You will be accountable for the achievement of profit, persistency, and growth goals through financial analysis of employer groups and medical review of individual members.

What You Will Do

  • Case Quote Authority Limit (QAL) of up to $3,000,000 specific excess loss annualized premium and $30,000,000 aggregate attachment point.
  • Determine level of risk based on established guidelines and appropriate deviation of guidelines when appropriate.
  • Analyze information on past case level aggregate claim and shock loss history, medical information review and consultations with Nurses and/or Doctors as well as other standard criteria.
  • Determine needed rate level utilizing multiple tools: manuals, experience rating, plan change tables etc.
  • Develop and determine appropriate aggregate factors.
  • Underwrite larger and more complex cases.
  • Effectively negotiate and communicate case pricing with Field Sales, Brokers, or other producers to arrive at balanced decisions that are expected to achieve company goals and be competitive in the marketplace.
  • Serve as a role model for other underwriters. Establish themselves as underwriting experts and as the 'go to" person for underwriting issues. Act as a mentor to other underwriters through, training & consulting.
  • Handle high-visibility and/or otherwise special cases. Confer with other Underwriting Consultants, AVP of Underwriting, and or VP of Underwriting on complex cases and situations not established by practice.
  • Manage assigned block of business and accountable for meeting departmental goals
  • Provide competitive feedback on rates/factors and products to management.
  • Recommend improvements in underwriting and marketing strategies.
  • Take the lead and facilitate underwriting projects and cross training initiatives.
  • Daily interaction with field staff; Sales Reps and other underwriters to maintain consistency and support department workflow.
  • Complete underwriting segment response of Marketing RFPs.
  • ESL quoting system point person for underwriting region. Assist with month end outstanding renewal finalizations.
  • Actively seek out/identify resources and projects to improve underwriting staff and improve understanding of business line within the company and industry.
  • May represent Symetra at external events and functions as appropriate
  • Provides back-up support for AVP of Underwriting.
  • Build and maintain excellent client, Broker, Third Party Administrator, Sales Rep, and internal personnel relations.

Compensation

Salary Range: $100,300 – $167,100 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Your Experience And Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 4-year college degree or equivalent combination of education and business experience preferred.
  • 12+ years excess loss risk-based underwriting.
  • Extensive knowledge of excess loss products and pricing.
  • Adept knowledge of the underwriting discipline and strong understanding of employee benefit plans.
  • HIA, MHP, or CEBS designations highly preferred.
  • Proven analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment in making sound decisions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Service and Sales oriented.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Adept presentation skills.
  • Effective in a fast paced and high production environment with constantly shifting priorities.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • David Young/ESL System experience.
  • Some minimal travel required
