Your missions

Position Summary

Responsible for providing highly advanced level, professional accounting and financial analysis for the National University.   Activities include auditing, preparing, maintaining, analyzing, verifying, and reconciling financial transactions, statements, records and reports.  Will be responsible for the general ledger and subsidiary accounts, preparing accurate and timely financial reports, and ensuring appropriate accounting control procedures.  Duties will also include conducting analysis for accruals, prepaid and amortizations, journal entries, account reconciliation, fixed assets processing and reporting, grant accounting, lease and cash management, property and sales tax filings.  May also serve as back-up for other accountants within the department as well as the direct manager.   This position is integral to ensue accuracy and timeliness of accounting activities and to maintain sound financial control environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides complex professional and technical assistance in the administration and implementation of the University’s financial, auditing and accounting programs, including financial report development, and budget monitoring,
  • Participates in and supervises the posting, balancing and reconciliation of the general and subsidiary accounts
  • Analyzes financial statement accounts, identifies unusual trends or erroneous entries, and verifies accuracy of transactions and balances.
  • Monitors the budget for various cost centers, funds, and projects determining if funds are available and expenditures are classified properly.
  • Develops, evaluates, and implements business process improvements and innovative or alternative solutions, procedures and accounting policies to streamline, sustain and strengthen internal controls for month-end close and other finance assignments, including researching workflow process from general ledger to subledgers and systems. Provide advice and options on the best way to automate processes in the system
  • Work closely with Finance and Accounting leaders to identify and recommend improvements to maximize value and efficiency of Workday Financials
  • Participates in the preparation and analysis of audit schedules and reports for external auditors
  • Analyzes property leases for compliance with the latest lease accounting standards and ensures proper financial statement representation.  Reviews and submits monthly lease payments for properties.
  • Maintains fixed assets management subsystem.  Reviews for compliance with internal asset classification rules, process depreciation and reconciliation to the General Ledger (GL).  
  • Collaborates with the Office of Sponsored Research to assist with budget submission on grant proposals.  Ensures awarded grants follow Federal OMB guidelines and any regulations required by funding agencies.   Prepares and analyzes monthly and quarterly reports for internal and external agencies.
  • Creates schedules and provides information for year-end audit and tax returns.
  • Assists in preparation of Federal, State and local tax filings as well as sales and use taxes and property tax exemption and business property tax filings.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the Supervisor or Director.
  • Participates in the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and other system upgrades and conversions
  • Provides consultation or expert advice to management / leadership on assigned areas of responsibility

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and/or Accounting or related field, required; Master’s degree, preferred; and, five (5) years’ experience in accounting within a large non-profit or corporate office; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of fund accounting principles, processes and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), as well as, University policies, process and procedures regarding financial transactions; including GL analysis and month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and follow through with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities. Good follow-up and follow-through to ensure deliverables.
  • Proficient in prioritizing work to meet deadlines, and multi-task while maintaining flexibility in the work environment in accordance to the organization’s values.
  • Intermediate use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook with advanced excel skills including VLOOKUP’s and Pivot Tables. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individual of constituencies in a diverse community.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing while providing excellent customer service.
  • Work independently and foster a cooperative spirit within a large and/or small team of diverse cultures across the organization and within all levels.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency.
