Assistant Department Manager

Environmental and Cultural Resource Services

Job Summary

The Environmental and Cultural Resources Team is looking for an SOI-qualified remote-hybrid archaeologist to assist with projects in both the office and in the field. The applicant must have strong writing skills and should be familiar with the National Environmental Protection Act and National Historic Preservation Act/Section 106 requirements for different project types. Successful applicants will have previous experience planning and leading archaeological projects in multiple states for multiple agencies, be willing to work in a team to complete other permitting projects, be able to multi-task, and be a strong communicator.

VPS specializes in telecommunications projects in more than 40 states. Our preferred candidate will be able to primarily work remotely with onsite flexibility to support field work. This is a remote-hybrid position with expected travel availability approximately 20%.

The Assistant Department Manager works closely on the goals and objectives of the department with the Department Manager and upper management at Vantage Point. Their primary goal is the day-to-day operations within the department to make sure that the client’s goals and needs are being met at all times, and that the quality of work that is produced remains at a high level for all projects.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Work closely with the Department Manager to assist in the day-to-day management of projects and personnel, Including: timesheet approval, budget audits, deadline and reporting coordinator, approval of time-off, billing/time verification
  • Assist or lead hiring, training, template preparation, and procedure guides within the department
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and right-of-way specialists within Vantage Point for environmental and cultural resource concerns for projects and proposals
  • Correspond with federal and state agencies on current permitting requirements
  • Editing, writing and preparation of archaeological proposals, Phase I/Class I reports, and providing technical professional opinions for all aspects of project planning
  • Organize and plan Phase III/Class III field projects of various sizes, in multiple states
  • Act as a liaison with federal, state, and tribal entities for projects and clients (attend client meetings as needed, either remotely or in-person)
Education
  • Master’s degree or higher in one of the following fields (or related field): archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation
  • Valid US Driver’s license, clean driving record
Skills and Requirements
  • Experience with federal or state permitting for environmental and/or cultural resources required
  • Experience planning and completing all scales of cultural resource projects
  • Ability to be permitted on a federal level
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Availability to travel domestically approximately 20% (Travel availability is a requirement due to field support and determined by Department Manager)
