The Global Tuna Alliance (GTA) is an independent group of retailers and tuna supply chain companies that are committed to transforming current tuna management and practices towards more sustainable ones.

Join us at the GTA, a dynamic and forward-thinking organisation at a pivotal moment in our journey. We are a dedicated not-for-profit partnership of global industry leaders focused on improving the sustainability of oceans. 

We are small and agile, and this role will provide a unique opportunity to define a deeper, more impactful transformation project for tuna within Regional Fisheries Management Organisation platforms. To date, the Global Tuna Alliance has exceeded expectations in influencing international fisheries management and practices. We are now poised to elevate our impact further and are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to join us in driving meaningful change in fisheries management.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a seasoned professional with extensive experience in international fisheries management, particularly in tuna and Regional Fisheries Management Organisations. This role is pivotal in developing and implementing policy, advocacy, and engagement strategies/campaigns across global oceans, aligned with GTA objectives. The role reports directly to the Executive Director and can be based anywhere globally, so long as remote work is practical. GTA mainly works globally so out-of-office hours  calls/webinars are regular

Key Responsibilities:
Advocacy Leadership:
  • Develop and lead advocacy with sophisticated campaigns focused on sustainable tuna fishing and ocean conservation.
  • Help guide RFMO focus areas and priorities. Supporting the GTA Partners' position on RFMO matters.
    • Engage with decision-makers and stakeholders globally to advance GTA's mission and objectives.
    • Work closely with and leverage GTA Partners and our Partnership Advisory Group. 
Strategic Partnership Development:
  • Build and maintain a large network within government, NGO, and industry sectors related to tuna fisheries.
  • Foster strategic partnerships and collaborations to enhance GTA’s influence and reach.
  • Work closely with and leverage GTA Partners, working groups and our Partnership Advisory Group to improve the sustainability of tuna in their supply chains.
Project and Campaign Management:
  • Design and execute successful campaigns and projects with measurable outcomes and impact.
  • Utilise expertise in fisheries management and wider stakeholder community to guide project direction and impact.
Operational and Fundraising:
  • Contribute to the operational and financial aspects of the GTA, ensuring sustainable growth and effectiveness.
  • Participate in fundraising activities to support the GTA's mission and projects.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Skills:
  • Advanced degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of working experience in multilateral fisheries with a focus on tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organisations and fisheries policy
  • Demonstrated success in developing and leading policy and advocacy campaigns.Extensive global network within the government, NGO, and industry sectors related to tuna fisheries.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in English; additional European languages are desirable.
  • Passion for sustainability and environmental conservation.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote setting and foster strong working relationships with partner organisations.
  •  Ability to foster and work within a team ethos in a remote setting
  • A pro-active approach and willingness to work effectively in a ‘start-up environment’ - adaptability, strong communication skills, resilience, and an appetite to learn and grow continuously
  • Strong IT skills and willingness to learn and explore new technologies
  • Willingness to travel extensively globally

Preferred Qualifications and Skills::

  • Experience in operational and financial management within a non-profit or similar organisation.
  • Proven track record in fundraising and resource development.
  • A critical thinker able to approach the challenging issues of international fisheries management with novel solutions that can deliver impactful change.
