Your missions

Sourcebooks is looking for an entrepreneurial Associate Director of Subsidiary Rights who will manage the licensing of Sourcebooks titles across foreign language translations, audiobooks, film and television adaptations, and merchandising. You will work closely with new and existing licensing partners to negotiate deals and contracts. This position is highly visible and collaborative within the company and will represent titles across all Sourcebooks imprints.  This is the perfect opportunity for a proven leader in Subsidiary Rights to make a big impact to put books in the hands of readers around the globe!

This is a remote position with occasional trips to our office in Naperville.  This position can be hybrid in Naperville or NYC, or fully remote in the following states ONLY: AZ, CT, MD, MN, NC, NJ, NY, NV, OR, PA, TN, TX, WA, AND WI

Associate Director Job Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and initiate relationships with publishers, agents, and scouts in all relevant countries and territories around the world as well as with domestic licensees including audio publishers, book clubs and fair, film/television, etc. 
  • Develop a seasonal front list rights plan that seeks to provide the best opportunities for income and penetration on a per-title basis. 
  • Create materials and communications to pitch titles directly to publishers (and domestic partners) and to prepare co-agents and scouts to represent our titles to suitable publishers; regularly provide applicable publicity and sales updates to all partners. 
  • Maintain a database of pitches, interest, acceptance, and rejection and report these metrics regularly.
  • Represent Sourcebooks at international fairs including Book Expo, Frankfurt, Bologna, London, Guadalajara, and others as necessary.
  • Negotiate all agreements for maximum benefit to Sourcebooks and our authors, read every contract to flag concerns for internal legal review, and shepherd contracts through the approval process and mutual execution.
  • Provide licensees with contact information for the transfer of files and negotiate all fees.
  • Insure long-term compliance including receipt of advance payments, sales reports, and royalties; renewals; reversions; etc.
  • Oversee and continually refine workflows for databasing contracts and payments.
  • Provide timely responses to all queries from publishers, partners, editors, agents, and authors.
  • Work collaboratively on strategic direction with the Publisher and Editorial Directors. 
  • Supervise/manage the Subsidiary Rights coordinator.

 Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in Subsidiary Rights in book publishing. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Proactive with strong follow up skills. 
  • Superior attention to detail, problem-solving skills and negotiation skills. 
  • A self-starter who can take initiative, and change focus, when necessary, in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Excellent communication skills; written, verbal, and presentation. 
  • Must be comfortable travelling up to 25% of the time.
