What’s the role?

We are looking for an experienced frontend leaning, full stack engineer to  join our established yet evolving Collecting web team.

As a senior software engineer, you will be responsible for building and maintaining product features for enhancing the core buyer experience at Etsy, architecture, documentation and mentoring engineers.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Core Buyer Collecting. Eng/Prod: 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub, or in the San Francisco Bay Area, may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?

• As part of the core buyer experiences group, the collecting web team is responsible for maintaining and improving the favoriting ecosystem on Etsy.com, as well as how to help customers make purchasing decisions through the aid of collections and gift lists!

• We are a true product engineering team, focused on building delightful experiences for people buying on Etsy

• You will work directly with Design, Product, and Engineering across product and enablement teams and collaborate with sister native app teams. Your work will have a multiplier effect, touching all of Etsy’s product teams as well as every piece of the customer journey. 

• Collecting is a cross-functional, cross-platform initiative made up of 20+ web and native engineers who are fun, curious, collaborative and passionate leaders - if that resonates with you, please join us!

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Be responsible for the design, development and implementation of highly maintainable and scalable systems by contributing at all levels of our web application stack

• Collaborate with teammates to independently tackle well-scoped problems, regularly deliver work to end users and be a primary contributor to team’s goals

• Contribute to and lead projects - such as enhancing the information architecture of the favoriting landing screen and make it easier to build new features through product as well as technical investments

• Create and update reusable components that are used by product teams across all of Etsy

• Provide daily support for peers across Etsy (ex. Writing documentation, reviewing pull requests, answering Slack questions)

• Identify and propose tracks of work that reduce tech debt and move our product forward

• Serve as an advocate for engineering best practices and contribute to the engineering vision

• Be a mentor and guide to fellow engineers

[Qualification Section]

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• Desire to understand the “why” behind your team’s work, and how it benefits our customers

• You have expertise building customer-facing web applications, using both back-end technologies (we use PHP, MySQL, Memcache) and front-end frameworks (TypeScript, React, SCSS)

• <Something about monitoring and testing, and using Storybook>

• Thrive when faced with customer and product-focused challenges, using experimentation, and both quantitative and qualitative methods, to drive decision-making

• Strength in frequent collaboration and communication within a cross-functional product team

• Successful track record of scoping, roadmapping, and leading projects to completion, with a passion for mentoring and coaching other engineers in a compassionate manner

• A growth mindset, with an appreciation for receiving feedback and embracing unexpected outcomes as learning opportunities

• You have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are comfortable working with and improving on code you did not originally write.
