POSITION DESCRIPTION
HGL is seeking a senior-level Environmental Engineer to support remedial planning and design projects nationwide. The successful candidate will specialize in sediment remediation design for projects in freshwater, estuarine, and marine environments.
This position has the opportunity to be fully remote.
Project sites are located nationwide with concentrations in the Midwest, Pacific Northwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast regions. This position will be responsible for leading technical execution in remedial design, design and implementation of feasibility studies, treatability studies, civil design, and construction engineering support for HGL’s portfolio of environmental projects for USEPA, USACE, NASA, and commercial/industrial clients across the United States and territories. Projects may include large-scale, complex sediment remediation efforts that address contaminated sediments derived from mining, commercial, and industrial activities. While the focus is on sediment remediation, the ideal candidate will have remedial design experience over the range of contaminated media including sediments, porewater, surface water, soils, and groundwater.
Responsibilities/Duties
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
In this position you would function as a principal remedial design engineer specializing in sediment remediation. Specific activities and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Direct, manage, and lead project engineering design teams.
- Collaborate with Project Manager, engineers, geologists, CAD/GIS specialists, and other technical staff to prepare studies, strategies for remediation, concepts, and solutions.
- Develop engineering studies, plans, designs, specifications, and cost estimates for remediation of contaminated sediments.
- Support civil and environmental remediation design projects.
- Ensure project objectives are met.
- Develop, review, and maintain project schedules
- Perform quality control/quality assurance reviews of engineering work products.
- Mentor junior engineering staff.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with clients, regulators, project team members, and company management.
- Support business development efforts, including developing proposals, touring potential remediation sites, and meeting with potential clients.
- Periodic business travel is required. Travel is anticipated to consist primarily of visits to project sites with periodic visits to client offices.
This full-time position will begin in September 2024.
Remote/work-from-home status are available for this position, with episodic in-office work at various HGL office locations.
Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm although travel, site visits and construction inspection will occasionally require varying hours.
Required Skills
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
The ideal candidate will need the following as a foundation for success in this role:
- 15 plus years of engineering experience on sediment remediation projects.
- Expert knowledge of CERCLA/Superfund
- Demonstrated experience as stamping engineer of record for sediment remediation projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering and active Professional Engineer (PE) license(s).
- Experience working with and/or for governmental organizations as well as private commercial and industrial clients.
- Demonstrated ability to smoothly handle multiple assignments simultaneously and prioritize activities while maintaining schedule and quality.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Excellent technical writing and proofreading skills.
- Strong organizational skills, with the proven ability to work efficiently and independently, as well as experience working within an integrated multi-disciplinary team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT – Preferred, not required
- Advanced degree (e.g., Master of Science or Ph.D.) in civil/environmental engineering.
- Experience remediating contaminated sediments in marine and estuarine settings.
- Experience remediating contaminated sediments in freshwater river and stream systems.
- Certifications in relevant areas, such as Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL), Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (40-hour HAZWOPER)
- Hands on experience with MS Project or P6
