As a Solutions Engineer at Orium, you’ll be instrumental to the commerce sales cycle with a focus on complex services related to the delivery of digital commerce experiences. You’ll report to our VP of Sales, and serve as the subject matter expert providing technical solutions consulting to our customers on just about every relevant subject. If you’re succeeding in the role, then it’ll seem like you’re the second-smartest person in the company on every topic - knowledgeable enough to inform, resourceful enough to bootstrap quickly, and discerning enough to segue to internal resources when they’re needed to stick the landing.
Your focus will be on digital commerce, event streaming, and microservice systems architectures spanning diverse technologies, as well as persuasively liaising with merchant stakeholders from senior developers right up to the C-Suite. You’ll be responsible for educating about and demonstrating the composable.com solutions accelerator, performing technical discovery of legacy merchant systems, and building out a mental model of their current- and future-state architecture.
We may be wrong, but we’re thinking that great candidates are likely to have software development experience, a customer obsession, and be an expert at context switching between diverse opportunities throughout the sales funnel - from expressions of interest to contract negotiation and back, over the course of a day. The sales engineering function is still being defined at Orium; if you’re excited by the idea of sculpting the processes and offerings that lead us to success as we scale, this might be just the role for you.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate as part of a cross-functional team to turn opportunities into clients, including positioning, educating, and presenting, to clients and to internal teams
- Solution for complex use cases, employing your broad holistic knowledge to recommend the best strategy to drive client success out of many possible configurations
- Perform technical discovery, gathering requirements and defining a technical solution that considers business needs, legacy software, client budget, and profitability
- Continuously improve your subject matter expertise, through courses, self-led development, and market and analyst research to ensure you know the key tools in the space and can both envision and educate on their capabilities.
- Track your performance towards individual and team objectives, including annual revenue goals, to ensure you’re contributing to the success of the sales function
Skills and Qualifications
- University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Commerce, or a comparable skillset
- 5+ years industry experience in enterprise software services, SaaS software, martech, complex microservices, or similar verticals
- 3+ years experience in a sales, launch engineering, or an escalated technical support type role - somewhere you were an expert who juggled responsibilities
- Strong knowledge of the digital commerce landscape and an understanding of the emerging technology ecosystem, including Composable Commerce, modular DXP, cloud infrastructure, and customer data platforms. Bonus points for expertise with ERP systems, order management, mobile app development, or brick-and-mortar retail tech
- Ability to scope, pitch, and work collaboratively with customers’ technology leadership
- Experience in a startup environment or with early-stage product development a plus
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to lead through influence
- Ability to travel to meet customers, partners and our community. All travel is voluntary, but opportunities arise most months to spend a few days on the road (<10%), and we find there’s a huge value in being face to face with key stakeholders
- Professional working fluency in Spanish is a bonus; however, is not required
Is the role a fit for you?
The Solutions Engineer role is perfect for collaborators with strong technology consulting skills, who can work from the edges one day and take centre stage and speed-solve puzzles the next. You’ll find fulfilment in an exciting and expanding sector of e-commerce, and in the role, if you:
- Saw buzzwords and acronyms in the job description you didn’t know, and have already Googled them. There’s a thousand, and humbly and quickly filling in gaps will be key;
- Know that client relationships have a lasting impact on your business, and know that the credibility you build with key stakeholders makes all the difference;
- Have interest beyond the technical niche. You’re an entrepreneur at heart, context-aware and willing to wear different hats to move your business forward;
- Thoroughly enjoy collaborative work, but are equally able to go heads-down for a few hours to solo a cool new feature, thought leadership article, or complex estimation;
- Have an appetite (or at least, a tolerance) for uncertainty. You can push ahead without hours to research, and are willing to come off of mute with a hunch;
- Love to share knowledge, up-skill others, and convert an API reference and a JSON payload into a story that gets people excited about these best-in-breed solutions; and
- Jump at the chance to be part of a coalition (internal & partners) that co-owns the output. This is a team sport, and not a fit for a solo hero who lives and dies by their work alone.
Benefits and Perks
- Enjoy a flexible schedule of full-time hours. As a remote-first organization, we care about the work you do, but it’s up to you to choose where and how you do it.
- Explore ongoing opportunities for professional development: training, conferences, certifications, and in-house peer mentorship.
- Experiment with new techniques, wear multiple hats and learn about new disciplines.
- Pursue independent projects, explore new ideas, and challenge yourself in your field with dedicated “Awesome time” (self-directed professional development) annually and quarterly training budgets.
- On top of standard medical and dental coverage, we offer benefits like a parental leave top-up plan, an EAP, mental health coverage, virtual healthcare and a minimum vacation policy.
- Our Toronto HQ is a modern, ergonomic space complete with hotelling standing/sitting desks available and an open-concept social atmosphere.
- Additional perks are available including in-house mindfulness sessions, remote group get-togethers, and more!
- The Canada On Target Earnings range for this role is $140,000 - $170,000 CAD. This range is dependent on your experience and is made up of both base pay and variable pay. This pay range is not inclusive of any benefits or equity that might exist in your total compensation package.
Performance and Growth Expectations
We emphasize accountability for outcomes, but autonomy in activities. Your work will be measured across a number of data points (peer, leader & project team feedback) and will also be measured on the basis of client and user satisfaction. Your growth path is in your hands— you’ll have ongoing meetings with your leader to help determine your path, but your progress will be based on what you hope to achieve and how you choose to access the resources available to you.
