Job description

Fabric by Gerber Life, the one-stop shop for new parents to secure their family's financial future, is looking for an Engineering Manager. Acquired by Western & Southern, we have the backing of a 130+ year-old company, balanced with the culture and velocity of a startup. This role will report to the Director of Engineering.

As an Engineering Manager for the Insurance team, you will join our engineering team in building a fleet of simple tools to help parents stop procrastinating and start tackling their long term financial to-do lists. You are self-motivated, can wear many hats, and are excited about the hybrid role of managing software engineers and writing code yourself. We believe it’s critical to the success of both the manager and the engineer that the manager understands in practice the expectations of their reports.

Come join us as we re-make a $650 Billion industry and work to improve the lives of millions of families.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Development:
Lead, mentor, and coach a team of engineers, providing guidance on technical execution, career growth, and professional development. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.

  • Technical Execution:
Drive the successful execution of engineering projects by organizing team work, setting goals, and holding the team accountable. Ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software solutions, including refining QA processes and overseeing code reviews.

  • Strategic Planning & Collaboration:
Actively engage with stakeholders, including Product Management, Underwriting, and external partners, to contribute to strategic planning, problem-solving initiatives, and aligning technical decisions with broader business goals.

  • Project Management:
Oversee the prioritization and execution of engineering tasks, including managing critical infrastructure projects. Ensure efficient project delivery by negotiating scope, managing resources, and maintaining project timelines.

  • Hiring & Team Building:
Drive the recruitment, onboarding, and retention of top engineering talent. Uphold high hiring standards and contribute to the continuous improvement of hiring practices, ensuring a strong alignment between team dynamics and company culture.

  • Innovation & Technical Excellence:
Promote a culture of technical excellence by encouraging data-driven solution design, enhancing QA processes, and supporting innovative approaches to problem-solving. Ensure the engineering team stays ahead of industry trends and best practices.

To be successful in this role, you’ll bring:

  • 3+ years of proven experience as an Engineering Manager or similar leadership role, preferably in a startup or fast-paced environment.
  • Strong technical background with hands-on experience in software engineering, particularly in backend technologies and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS).
  • Demonstrated ability to drive project execution, manage multiple priorities, and deliver high-quality software solutions.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills, with a track record of mentoring and developing engineering talent.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with QA processes, code reviews, and maintaining testing frameworks is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with the insurance industry or a related field is a plus, but not required.
  • Joy in exploring and solving thorny problems.
  • Compassion for your coworkers and our customers.
  • Willingness to make mistakes.

Salary Range: $150,000 - $185,000
