Your missions

AIP Publishing is a leading publisher of the physical sciences. Working at AIP Publishing means being part of a mission: to accelerate scientific discovery while reimagining the future of scholarly publishing.

AIPP is proud to have been named one of the Best Companies to Work for in New York in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. We foster a collaborative, creative atmosphere and encourage an inclusive workplace culture that maximizes individual contributions.

We are seeking a Journal Manager who displays strong characteristics of AIP Publishing’s cultural principles: Progressive; Researcher-Focused; Experimental; Equitable; Authentic; Action-Oriented; and Collaborative to play a pivotal role in overseeing journal management, journal expansion and development plans in AIP Publishing's open access and hybrid journal portfolios.

The Journal Manager, as part of the Publisher’s Office, is responsible for the success of titles within the AIP Publishing portfolio. This includes coordination of the editor’s team, in collaboration with the EiC, and development of journals, leading the launch and success of new journals where required, overseeing strategic initiatives, editorial direction, and content development while ensuring financial and editorial targets are met. The Journal Manager is the “face” of the journals and AIP Publishing in the UK and Europe interacting directly with all the relevant stakeholders in the physical sciences research community – authors, reviewers, readers, academic editors, associate editors, and members of journal advisory boards. The Journal Manager also provides the research, analysis and planning that drive journal objectives, and monitors progress towards targets as well as competitor and Editor performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research and analysis in support of strategic objectives.
  • Ensure the successful launch and operation of new or established journals to meet their financial and editorial targets.
  • Recruit editorial board members, run effective board meetings, and work with journal editors to define editorial direction.
  • Conceive, develop, and commission impactful content and special issues.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team on initiatives to increase journal usage, visibility, and authorship.
  • Represent AIP Publishing at topical conferences and author’s institutions. Build relationships within relevant research communities and conduct researcher outreach to engage scientists at all stages of their careers.

Requirements:

  • Prior experience in STEM publishing, and a specific focus on Open Access is a plus.
  • Proficient in physics or the physical sciences; a graduate or post-graduate degree in a physical science-related field is highly preferred.
  • Have exceptional written and oral communication skills and are confident working directly with leading researchers as editors.
  • Have strong interpersonal and negotiating skills, enabling you to make sound judgments and decisions.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to take responsibility, assess complex projects, and work on own initiative.
  • Some travel to relevant conferences and in-person meetings is a requirement for the position.

Additional details: £40,000 - £55,000

Salary within the above posted range is based on a variety of factors, including relevant experience.

Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK. Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.  The position will be remote based and employed via a third-party employer of record company.
