General Description

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a global, nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., working to improve environmental sustainability, human health, and resilience in the built environment through its programs and rating systems including LEED. USGBC’s U.S. Market Transformation and Development (U.S. MT&D) department is seeking a Florida-based Director U.S. MT&D works to ensure a vision that supports growth, development and inspiration of the USGBC Florida community, facilitates meaningful and effective market engagement, and delivers the best-in-class education and partnership opportunities toward meaningful market transformation. This position holds dual responsibility to the growth of market development opportunities and maintenance of relationships with existing partners, members, sponsors, volunteers, and allied organizations. The Director engages USGBC’s current stakeholder base around core programs and cultivates new business with clients in target sectors. Working with the Regional Director and other USGBC leadership, the Director participates in the development of the USGBC Florida work plan. 

 

This position is directly responsible for and leads the USGBC market engagement and development strategy in Florida, holding ownership over the growth of assigned USGBC/GBCI product suites. The Director works closely with the larger U.S. and South regional teams to support priority activities as assigned. The Director will further manage and mentor a Market Transformation and Development Associate to support executing these initiatives.


Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Draft and implement work plan aligned with U.S. MT&D strategic market/product, sector, and growth plans. 
  • Responsibility for annual profitable budget, inclusive of revenue strategy and implementation and expense management. Revenue portfolio includes, but is not limited to sponsorship, membership, event registration, and grants. 
  • Successful achievement of performance goals and oversight of programs for membership, partnership, LEED project registration, and other engagement metrics. 
  • Manage volunteer leadership and serve as co-chair/staff lead of Market Leadership Advisory Board.
  • Deliver engagement activities with local and regional staff and volunteers in alignment with USGBC’s business/strategic plan. Ensure consistent high-quality of programming.
  • Manage successful organizational and individual membership program in local community. Serve as primary relationship owner for key growth accounts in local market.
  • Cultivate, retain, and grow relationships with USGBC members and clients in the market and their engagement with USGBC, LEED, and other assigned products.
  • Keep current on market trends to identify and develop robust programs and business models that establish USGBC as a leading voice and innovator in our market, while attracting new business to the organization’s work.
  • Lead at least one market sector-focused campaign to grow engagement with USGBC and the use of USGBC product solutions.
  • Measure and communicate to USGBC and the volunteers, members and partners on the success, financial viability, and market impact of program efforts.
  • Build upon and grow the strong existing individual and corporate partnerships, and be the primary focal point with donors, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent USGBC at industry events, conferences, and meetings to promote initiatives and foster partnerships, including submitting proposals that feature USGBC initiatives, staff or members.
  • Collaborate with local governments and other entities to influence policies and regulations that support sustainable building practices, in conjunction with USGBC Policy & Advocacy staff.
  • Develop and execute communication strategies to promote USGBC programs and initiatives through various channels, including LinkedIn, digital communications and public presentations.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor, direct reports who support the local work plan and contribute to the achievement of goals.

Travel Requirements

  • Regular travel within Florida to support work plan.
  • Occasional travel to South Atlantic & South Central regions.

 

Education & Training Requirements/Preferences

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree is desirable.
  • LEED Green Associate and other GBCI credentials preferred.


Experience Requirements

  • 10+ years of proven non-profit management and/or business experience, preferably from a related community such as real estate, AE+C, or sustainability.
  • Preferred familiarity with the LEED rating system or green building practices.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing projects, staff and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability for business development or fundraising (sponsorships, grants, membership, advocacy, program development, etc.) Established resources and connections helpful.


Other required skills and qualifications

  • Ability to be creative and visionary, yet also be a pragmatic, hands-on business leader and manager who can build the organization’s resources and brand to achieve larger ambitions.
  • Natural aptitude as a relationship builder who can engage various stakeholders and disciplines, including corporate and community partners.
  • Excellent organizational manager with the ability to coach staff, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow through.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Experience creating and implementing revenue generation programs is highly desirable.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
  • Commitment to USGBC mission.
  • Interpersonal skills, team player.
  • Driver’s License, ability, and willingness to drive throughout the specified territory (listed above).
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.


Details:

  • Full Time, permanent, salaried, benefits-eligible, exempt status 
  • Location: Remotely based in Florida
  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm EST, 40 hours per week, including occasional evenings
