Position Summary
The DEN Baggage Handling System (BHS) Program is an extensive, multi-year construction upgrade project at Denver International Airport. The Cost Estimator will be a crucial member of DEN's Program Management Team (PMT), supporting the BHS Program and reporting to the DEN Project Manager.
This position involves meticulously planning and participating in preparing construction cost estimates for various structures based on drawings and specifications. The Cost Estimator evaluates cost-estimating deliverables, conducts site visits, and performs material takeoffs on BHS. They analyze pricing documents, collaborate with project stakeholders, and identify cost-saving opportunities. With the ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, this role ensures accuracy and completeness in estimates, prepares technical evaluations, and contributes to value engineering efforts. Proficiency in Excel for basic calculations is required in this position.
Position ResponsibilitiesReview Design/Build Contractor pricing and subcontractor recommendations throughout the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) process.Review and validate change requests.Develop independent cost estimates as needed.Maintain organized and detailed files, project records, and logs.Attend project meetings as required.Plan and participate in the preparation of construction cost estimates based on drawings, outlines, and specifications.Evaluate cost-estimating deliverables for accuracy and completeness.Prepare fair cost estimates for contractor proposals and conduct special studies when bids vary from estimates.Conduct site visits, perform material takeoffs, and evaluate pricing documents for cost estimation.Collaborate with project stakeholders to identify value engineering opportunities and cost-saving measures.Prepare technical evaluations, analyze cost-influencing factors, and compare estimates with contractor proposals for discrepancies.Perform medium to highly complex cost estimates and analysis for capital and professional services projects, recommending solutions to identified issues.Assemble market indicators to ensure the accuracy of estimating databases.Assist in evaluating consultants' cost estimates.Analyze costs of alternative designs and construction methods.Evaluate medium to highly complex quotes, bids, change orders, value engineering reports, and claims for accuracy and completeness.Accumulate pricing documents and historical and vendor cost data to develop cost-estimating deliverables.Conduct construction/project site visits to gather relevant information for cost estimates, ensuring the information is recorded and included in the final project estimate.Prepare draft reports, memos, and letters and assist in presentations to management.Position QualificationsBachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field preferred.10+ years of estimating experience required.Baggage Handling System estimating experience required.Bid evaluation and negotiation experience required.Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills required.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision required.Strong time management skills and excellent attention to detail are required.Vertical construction experience preferred.Occupied renovation experience preferred.Design/Build Contract experience preferred.Additional Requirements
Physical: Standing or sitting for long periods; must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times and spend extended hours in front of a computer screen.
Cognitive: Problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills; computer and software skills; and ability to read and interpret text online or in printed form.
