Location: Remote, various locations throughout California

Salary Range:The beginning salary range for this position is Range-19, (Steps 1-3) $72,884.41 - $80,368.69.

Position Overview

In collaboration and under the direction of the Manager of Student Life & Alumni Relations, the Student Engagement Specialist - Alumni Relations will work to elevate alumni and worker voice and engage students to provide input into Calbright in the design and development of programs, services, and governance in order to advance student success, career readiness and labor market outcomes; build community support and student leadership (including student government and alumni relations) consistent with the unique and purposeful mission of the college --- and provide value for working and economically dislocated adults. This position builds and nurtures the growth of alumni communities critical for engagement, learning, and career advancement. This work builds off of best practices grounded in successful digital social networks, near-peer, and mentorship models, and adult and workplace communities of practice, which is aligned with the mission, vision, and core values of Calbright. Reporting to the Manager of Student Life & Alumni Relations, the Student Engagement Specialist - Alumni Relations serves as a member of the Student Services and Success Team and works in collaboration with various departments including Enrollment Services, Career Services, Learning and Instruction, Workforce Strategy & Innovation, Marketing and Communication, and others.


Student Engagement Specialists must be flexible with schedules, as hours will include evenings and weekends. This position will require the Student Engagement Specialist to work at least two Saturdays a month.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities 

The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed within the scope of work.


  • Provide professional and specialized skills for developing, planning, promoting and implementing student engagement, development, and leadership programs, activities, and services for Calbright alumni;
  • Elevate alumni voice and engage students to provide feedback on their student experiences at Calbright to advance the design and improvement of Calbright programs and services for current and future students;
  • Contribute to the development of online community initiatives designed to build affinity and increase feelings of belonging amongst diverse student communities;
  • Tailor engagement efforts to positively impact student success, career readiness, community culture, student leadership, and other identity and advocacy-related outcomes;
  • Contribute to functional area-specific programs and responsibilities related to student leadership development and collaboration;
  • Recruit and work with interested alumni in participating in Associated Student Organization, clubs and other co-curricular opportunities and provide ongoing support;
  • Plan, design, and provide ongoing engagement for Calbright students and alumni;
  • Identify, coordinate, and implement online student engagement opportunities for virtual learners to promote student success by collaborating with cross-functional teams;
  • Utilize a variety of innovative technologies, online learning platforms, and systems to engage virtual learners, provide timely information, and improve student and alumni participation;
  • Assist with the development and distribution of informational material for virtual student engagement opportunities;
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor virtual student engagement activities and events to support and improve retention of virtual learners;
  • Track, analyze, evaluate and present data for the improvement of virtual student engagement;
  • Create, support, and deliver culturally responsible programming targeting student support and persistence for adult learners;
  • Ensure all engagement activities are inclusive and aligned to the core tenets of universal design;.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven ability to engage adult students through online platforms and social media;
  • Working knowledge of technology and technical language;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within and across teams, and be self-motivated;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to student/administrative issues and concerns;
  • Ability to gather, report, and analyze data to improve online student success;
  • Ability to be well organized and prioritize duties based on department and organization goals and student needs;
  • Ability to listen and understand student issues and concerns as it relates to the College mission and clearly communicate this information to leadership;
  • Strong communication skills - both verbal and written;
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population and carry out the daily operation of student engagement activities;
  • Proven experience with Google Suite applications, learning management systems, online learning software, social media platforms, mobile applications, software applications, and other digital tools;
  • Experience working in a distributed and/or remote environment;
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple work tasks or projects.
  • Ability to make public presentations in small or large group settings.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, quickly adapt to changes, prioritize projects, and communicate clearly to team members impacted by any changes.
  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, staff and faculty.


Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of an Associate's degree or equivalent years of experience working in digital environments with adult learners and/or workers
  • A minimum of two years working on student engagement, or alumni relations specifically with adult learners


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing alumni and mentorship programs for adult learners.
  • Experience designing communication in formats that are engaging and informative.


Working Conditions and Travel

  • Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Requires the ability to function in a remote online instructional environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to use hearing and speech to make presentations to groups and carry on conversations over the phone and in-person. Requires speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings, on the phone, and to distinguish sound prompts from various types of equipment. Requires near visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens. Requires sufficient hand/arm/finger dexterity to retrieve work materials, operate a personal computer keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
