Job description

Who We Are
At COURIER, we empower people and communities to connect with the news, opportunities,
and issues impacting their lives. We believe that giving local journalists stronger platforms,
access to audience data, and opportunities to grow with (not against) changing social media
trends can significantly impact civic participation in a state—and build a healthier democracy
from the ground up.

Through original reporting, kitchen-table storytelling, and approachable explainers, we’re
passionate about making the news real—and interesting—to our audience. We’re a rapidly
growing team with new ideas on how to change the political landscape of this world.
We are currently seeking a Senior Community Editor based in Texas. This person will be a
key, early component in our Texas newsroom as COURIER builds up a statewide news outlet
devoted to delivering important, empowering news to Texans where they already are—online.

Job Description
The Senior Community Editor is responsible for writing and editing stories and producing
multimedia content that center and resonate with Texans. This includes sharing useful
information on the state and local level (think “news you can use”); producing graphics and
videos about the shared experience of living in the state; and creating opportunities that lift up
voices that often go unheard. Because of our mission to inspire more people to become civically
engaged, this person may also play a role in producing voting 101 information and sharing voter
testimonials for our voter hub ahead of the 2024 general election.

In addition to developing and executing the newsroom’s community content strategy, the Senior
Community Editor will build a plan for launching and producing the newsroom’s flagship email
newsletter product. This includes writing and curating content for the newsletter, playing a key
role in audience growth, and using audience feedback and engagement metrics to refine
content strategy and improve reader satisfaction.

The Senior Community Editor will report to the VP of Community Content, while working in close
coordination with our Texas Managing Director. This position will eventually oversee between 3
and 4 staffers: These community editors will be part of regional newsrooms that will be built out
over time. The Senior Community Editor will be responsible for providing guidance and editorial
support to their direct reports in conjunction with the broader coverage strategies laid out by the
state team and the VP of Community Content.

We’re a fully remote team, but applicants must live in Texas.

Duties include but are not limited to:
● Working with stakeholders to identify the topics and issues that resonate most with
our core audience to build out a Texas-specific community content strategy aimed at
increasing engagement and building trust

● Pitching and producing an average of 1-2 graphics, videos (may be presenter-led),
and other content per day for our social platforms (TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook)
that are relevant and useful to the audience we’re building in the DFW region
● Writing at least two site articles a week, using original reporting and/or best practices
for aggregation
● Editing and publishing wire, freelance, and content partnership content
● Writing, editing, formatting, and sending email newsletters that incorporate both
community and political stories (shepherded by the political department) while also
adhering to quality standards established by the Community department leadership
team
● Thinking creatively about how to grow the newsletter’s reach and engagement
● Utilizing audience insights and performance data to optimize the newsletter’s
performance and to create highly engaging social content
● Partnering with the newsroom’s Social Media Manager on best practices to maintain
the newsroom’s brand style and tone
● Supporting and at times leading initiatives aimed at better understanding our
audience, such as polls and surveys, and utilizing those learnings to inform content
strategy
● Supervise regional community editors to ensure they feel supported while producing
work that ladders up to departmental goals and KPIs. This includes day-to-day management, such

as receiving and approving pitches, fact-checking and editing their articles and graphic/video scripts,

and giving final sign-off on content before it gets sent to the Social Media Manager
for publishing; ensuring the team’s goals and initiatives are well-communicated and reinforced;

and working together to ensure workflows are clear.

The ideal candidate will have the following:
● A passion for earning the trust of our core audience by delivering the news and
information for which they are searching
● 5+ years of experience using creative storytelling to tell relevant and compelling
stories in Texas, ranging from “news you can use” to human-centered features to
SEO-friendly lifestyle listicles
● 5+ years of experience editing content using original reporting or information
aggregated from social media, news releases, and articles from other news outlets
● Experience with creating content for newsletters and an interest in better
understanding how to drive open and click-through rates and build a loyal subscriber
base
● An eagerness to collaborate with team members who have complementary skills.
● An ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary stakeholders across the company
● A strong grasp on AP style.
● Strong project and time management skills.
● Strong management, interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively with
multidisciplinary stakeholders across the company

COURIER offers the following benefits:

● Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO), 11 paid holidays a year
● Full suite of health benefits
● Flexible working arrangements
