Sanitation Technology Intern
Based in US-remote eligible (within PSI’s 27 approved states)
No Travel Required or Nairobi, Kenya
Work From Almost Anywhere Status = Eligible
Reports to Senior Technical Advisor I, WASH

Who we are
PSI is a network of locally rooted, globally connected organizations working to achieve consumer-powered healthcare — people-centered health systems that ensure quality, affordable care wherever and whenever it is needed. Our origins in sexual and reproductive health have grown into a broader mission. Today, we work with the public and private sectors as well as local communities, prioritizing people’s voice and choice and developing solutions to meet their essential health needs. Over the past five decades, we have helped push boundaries, break taboos, set trends, and develop innovative solutions to complex global health challenges.

Join us!

PSI’s WASH Team is a dynamic group of people doggedly focused on building core sanitation market functionality in the geographies we work – to ensure markets continue to grow without PSI intervention. Our success formula is that we are curious not status-quo, people-first not solutions-first, deliberate not formulaic, allies not gatekeepers, and doers not theorists. PSI’s WASH portfolio supports the implementation of market development programs in both urban and rural areas to ensure consumer-centered sustainable sanitation solutions for target populations. PSI seeks a Sanitation Technology Intern to support improvement in design, engineering, and processes to offer better sanitation products and improve safely managed sanitation. You will assist PSI projects in their assessment of best-fit products and technologies, training plans, and workflows.

PSI seeks an engineering Intern that will contribute to or lead sanitation technology development projects and support daily operations. The intern will receive coaching and mentorship, attend internal learning sessions hosted by other departments, and engage with colleagues at all levels across the organization, learn about what it's like to work for PSI, build relationships, and gain valuable real-world experience by performing a variety of tasks for our WASH team.

Hourly Pay:
$20.00 per hour/ Kenya Stipend of KSH 30,000
For US-based candidates, hourly pay is reflected above.* We value transparency and have provided the full salary range for this role. Actual base salary compensation will be determined by factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, experience, internal equity, external market analysis, and other business factors permitted by law. Hiring above the mid-point of the range would not be typical in order to allow for potential future salary growth. PSI offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes health care, retirement plan, generous leave, as well as other great benefits. For more information, please ask your recruiter or visit https://www.psi.org/careers/ to learn more!

*For all applicants applying outside of the US; please note that those hired outside of the US will be employed through the local PSI office. Pay and benefits will be commensurate with the role and practices of the local office, including payment in local currency.

Identify opportunities to scale promising solutions from around the world and support teams in identifying / creating innovative solutions. Conduct or provide support to research and analysis, assist with project management, propose ideas and solutions, and present the final deliverable to members of the team or a broader audience. 60% of Time

  • Some work experience preferred
  • Passionate about supporting WASH and market-based sanitation efforts across the world.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills with keen attention to detail and timeliness.

The candidate we hire will embody PSI’s corporate values:
Measurement: You use hard evidence to make decisions and guide your work. You set clear goalposts in advance and explain clearly if you need to move them.
Pragmatism: You’ll strive to deliver the best possible result with the resources available. You won’t be paralyzed by a need to make things perfect.
Honesty: You own your mistakes and are open about your shortcomings – it’s the only way you’ll learn and improve.
Collaboration: You’ll quickly establish a mental map of whom you can rely on for what, on your team, at headquarters, and in our country offices – if you try to do it all yourself, you won’t succeed.
Trust: You accept limits to your sphere of control and give colleagues the benefit of the doubt.
Commitment:  You are in it for the long-haul and want to grow with the organization, just like PSI serves its consumers and partners with host-country governments through thick and thin.
