East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create an economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families and the communities.
East Side House’s Early Childhood programs provide Early Head Start and Head Start services in a safe, supportive, educational environment for children ages 18+ months to 5 years of age. Serving 231 children daily from five locations, the comprehensive program is designed to develop the cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills of children in a safe, supportive environment. Children and families receive a broad range of educational, nutritional, social and preventive health services. Our staff foster partnerships with families so that they can support school learning and achievement as well as advocate for their children and themselves. We expect that all staff will work collaboratively, and with the community, to promote school readiness while creating a safe, healthy and protective environment.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following key activities:
- Reports to the Director of Facilities who is responsible for the oversight of all facilities.
- Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers following the sanitizing policies and procedures.
- Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets.
- Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
- Safely operate all job-related equipment and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, high pressure washers, vacuums, power tools, brooms, mops, squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
- Lock and unlock assigned buildings: secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
- Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
- Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas within sixteen feet of buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
- Move furniture, equipment, fixtures, supplies, and tools.
- Wash accessible interior and exterior windows and clean blinds on a monthly basis.
- Inventory control of all cleaning supplies, including ordering and receiving supplies.
- Provide maintenance order on a monthly basis.
- Completing daily/weekly/monthly custodial logs along with other equipment logs.
- Report any facility disrepairs to the Director of Facilities and call the NYCHA Customer Contact Center to report the facility disrepair/emergency immediately after ensuring the area is safe.
- Seasonal deep cleaning and maintenance of building interior and exterior (i.e. Floor waxing, carpet cleaning, pressure wash building).
- Ensure that the health and safety procedures are followed as directed by Director of Facilities and established program policies and procedures and Department of Health standards/requirements.
- Perform routine inspections and regular upkeep of interior and exterior areas to ensure areas are free of safety hazards, trash, weeds, and other foreign materials.
- Perform regular upkeep of outside areas, including lawns, landscaped beds, and playgrounds, to include weeding, trash and litter removal required to keep areas clean, neat and safe.
- Obtain FDNY certificates (S-95, F-07)

Work Environment
This role routinely uses janitorial supplies and equipment such as disinfectants, cleaning solutions, power drills, power washers, vacuums, etc. The employee is frequently exposed to hot/cold temperatures.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is primarily a standing role and requires the ability to lift and store supplies and furnishings, bend to sweep, mop, and vacuum, etc.
Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Expected schedule Monday through Friday, 7-hour split-shift schedule and some Saturdays. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s program needs.
Remote Work
ESH has determined that up to 0% of this position can be remote due to COVID-19. Subject to change as public health conditions evolve.
Travel
Travel may be necessary from one site to another for staff coverage purposes.
