Job Description:

40% Teaching Responsibilities:
• Plans and implements the daily program under the direction of the Associate Director
• Conducts developmentally appropriate activities for preschool children in a safe environment
• Plans the physical room arrangement that is conducive to optimal growth and development of preschool children and preparing the learning environment
• Leads the participation in research activities

• Uses appropriate guidance strategies that contribute to a positive classroom environment
• Maintains a clean and orderly physical environment

35% Planning, Documentation, and Assessment Responsibilities: 
• Plan with intentionality that’s based upon students’ interests,  development needs and culture
• Prepares, outside of class time, educational materials required to implement the daily activity plan
• Maintains communication with parents of each child in order to better foster the growth and development of their children
• Conducts assessments on children’s growth and development

20% Professional Responsibilities: 
• Maintains confidentiality of children, parents, and fellow staff members
• Knows and complies with the policies and procedures of the program and university
• Accepts feedback from supervisors and uses it to improve job performance
• Appropriately shares information with other staff members, parents, visitors, and observers
• Exhibits professionalism through communication, interactions with others, and personal conduct while supporting the mission and vision of the program and university

• Works well with others on assigned tasks/projects
• Assists the Preschool Programs Associate Director in any appropriate way

5% Other Duties Assigned

• Assists the infant/toddler Associate Director in any appropriate way

Employees of the ECELP are required to:

  • Complete 15 clock hours of professional development training per year, per licensing guidelines
  • Maintain the Early Childhood Ancillary certificate in order to maintain employment; conduct classroom assessments using the Infant/Toddler or Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale each semester
  • Maintain a current inventory of classroom materials
  • Keep classrooms, pods, and closets organized
  • Conduct monthly self-assessments of teaching using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System(CLASS)
  • Maintain personnel files for licensing; participate in monthly meetings with Associate Director to review classroom assessments, CLASS scores and incident reports. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Certified Lead Teacher-Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field and teacher certification in Pre-K through Grade 3.

Lead Teacher-Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field and one year of experience in early childhood education.

Note: Student employment, internships, and graduate assistant work will be calculated as half credit towards the experience requirement (i.e. 2 month internship = 1 month of experience)

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Lead Teacher-Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field and teacher certification in Pre-K through Grade 3.

Lead Teacher -Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field and 3 years of experience in early childhood education.

Special or Physical Qualifications:

Must comply to Department of Education criminal background check and fingerprinting and a LSU background check.


Must perform pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Due to the nature and/or position responsibilities, this position shall be subject to alcohol/drug testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.

Must be able to sit/sit on the floor, stoop, kneel, crouch and stand for extended periods of time. Capable of lifting, holding children and/or items that weigh 20 to 40 lbs or more and possibly to different parts of the building on occasion. Must be capable of completing daily housekeeping tasks (sweeping, removing trash, washing materials and food preparation).

ECELP - Lead Teacher, and Certified Lead Teacher Preschool Programs
The Lead Teacher, maintains an early childhood teacher certification as well as a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. This is a classroom teaching position and is responsible for the care and education of a group of infant/toddler or preschool aged children. Willingness to get messy during children’s activity time along with willingness to help clean up children after activity time. Willingness to sing in front of children.
